1 ANCIENT GREEK MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

2 1. Introduction: Music in ancient Greece was intimately linked to poetry and dance and was very present in the life of Greek society.

3 Music was important in religious ceremonies, at private parties, education, war and work and even had a recognized  therapeutic power.

4 2. Features: Monodic. Written in alphabetical notation.

5 3. Music in the ancient Greek Theatre:
Music was also important in Greek theater. There was a choir made up of between 12 to 15 musicians located in the orchestra and conducted by the Coryphaeus.

6 The musicians used to accompany the actors or alternating with them, and sometimes they played some different musical instruments. Current representation of Greek Theater

11 Greek Musical Instruments

12 Introduction Greek music is a genre of music that is full of diversity, because Greece is one of the world's oldest civilizations. Therefore, there have been many different kinds of music. Greece is a country that has been heavily influenced by other civilizations, like European and the Asian cultures.

13 History Greek musicians used pipes, lyres, drums, and cymbals were all types of instruments used in the earliest days of Greek music. The music was often played when people worshiped Dionysos, who was the god of wine and festivals.

16 Lyre A stringed musical instrument
This is a smaller version of the professional guitar and the eastern- Aegean barbiton. Lyre can refer generally to all three instruments as a family.

17 Clarinet A type of woodwind instrument
A straight cylindrical tube with an approximately cylindrical bore, and a flaring bell.

18 Mandolin Its shape is generally round or teardrop-shaped.
A mandolin may have f- holes, or a single round or oval sound hole.

19 Harp The harp is a multi- stringed instrument.
It is in the general category of chordophones and has its own sub category.

20 Bouzouki It was brought to Greece in the 1900s by immigrants from Asia Minor. The instrument is played with a plectrum and has a sharp metallic sound, reminiscent of a mandolin.

21 Baglama A long necked bowl-lute which is a plucked string instrument used in Greek music. Musically, the baglamas is most often found supporting the bouzouki in the Piraeus city style of rebetiko.

22 Tradition Dance Sirtaki/Zorba
Sirtaki is danced in a line or circle formation with hands held on neighbors' shoulders. Line formation is more traditional. It is also called Zorba’s dance.
