“Improving Autism Diagnosis in East Sussex”
Martin Packwood

The problem Current services are set-up for diagnosing all referrals from the most simple to the most complex Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) of psychiatrists, psychologists and specialist nurse More referrals for diagnosis of autism are made each year than this team has the ability to complete A backlog of people waiting for an appointment has built up People can wait for over a year for their first appointment The Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in East Sussex recognised last year that this was not acceptable, and invited proposals from Sussex Partnership Trust to address the backlog and reduce waiting times.
9
“The Proposals” A new assessment and diagnosis service:
MDT for more complex referrals (as now) New clinic for less complex referrals Based on learning from experience in West Sussex and Brighton and Hove One new specially trained Autism nurse for East Sussex: 4 appointments per person 2 hours per appointment The CCGs have agreed to fully fund these proposals (alongside others for ADHD).
10
“The Outcomes” New assessment and diagnosis service starts on 1st April 2016 Specialist Autism Nurse has been appointed Funding for new Consultant also agreed (joint with Brighton and Hove CCG) Backlog of people waiting will be cleared after approximately 40 weeks New referrals will then be offered a first appointment within 3 weeks Diagnosis will be completed within 12 weeks
