1
Adaptation... A structure or behavior that increases the chance for survival in an environment.
2
An Adaptation can be: A body part that helps an organism survive. = (Structural Adaptation) Ex. Camoflage Warning Coloration Mimicry(imitation)
3
Many animals are browns
and grays. Why??
4
Some fish lay on the sand
to camoflage.
5
Even eggs and babies can be
camoflaged.
6
Sometimes an animal will hi-lite
one body part to save another.
7
Some animals resemble the things they eat.
8
This harmless moth is a bumblebee mimic.
9
An Adaptation can be: Something you do that helps you survive=(Behavioral Adaptation). ex. “playing possum”, puffing up when frightened, plants growing to light
10
A deer will lift its white tail
to warn others of danger.
11
Most animals have ways to cool themselves off.
12
Phototropism -plants grow to light.
13
Many animals use threatening
behaviors to avoid a fight.
14
An Adaptation can be: Sometimes adaptations can a combination of structures and behaviors. ex. skunk spray or shivering in humans when cold
15
Plants have adaptations, too.
Stinging Nettles
16
Spiders produce a web by
secreting a sticky fluid.
17
The harvestman spiders can
secrete poison chemicals and even detach their legs that wiggle to distract the predator.
18
Adaptations allow a species to survive a changing environment
Adaptations allow a species to survive a changing environment. If the changes become too great, the species may become extinct(species gone).
19
Species- a group of organisms that can naturally reproduce with each other.
20
Variation- normal differences within a species.
21
Members of a species may also be born with a ...
Mutation- an abnormal genetic change
22
Sometimes those variations and mutations are an adaptation and allow the individual to survive.
23
The surviving individual(s) usually reproduce others like them.
24
Those individuals without the mutation tend to die off.
25
Over a very long period of time, the entire species can change to have the adapted mutation.
26
Explain Evolution!! ???

28
Charles Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection
Adaptations are created by genetic mutation, and those “good mutations” are then passed on to offspring causing a species to gradually change.
