Navajo Generating Station
The Navajo Generating Station is a 2,250-megawatt coal-fired power plant located on the Navajo Indian Reservation near Page, Arizona. The four utility owners of the power plant voted to operate it no longer than The Navajo and Hopi Nations are considering other uses for the land and associated transmission, including solar and wind generation. 8
Wind Resource – New Mexico
There is a significant low-cost, late-p.m. generation wind energy resource from New Mexico that can be supplied to western markets.
9
Wind Resource – Arizona
Arizona has a modest wind resource: TEP 100 MW project DOE study – 100 MW Hopi wind energy project, south of Winslow, AZ Recent proposals could provide a market for wind energy in AZ.
10
Solar Resource There is a robust solar resource in the region.
11
Potential for a Solar Plant
Location 4 Corners Region Capacity ~250 MWs Target COD 2019 GHI Resource Value 5.7 kWh/m2/day Jobs Created Construction: ~ 750 Operation: ~ 45 Land area 2,200 acres Siting Four Corners Region Entitlements and Permitting CEC from Arizona Corporation Commission (Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee) for transmission line (if not on tribal land) Bureau of Indian Affairs (if on tribal land)
12
Benefits - Solar Plant Employment opportunities – general laborers, electricians, carpenters. Revenue from lease payments, consulting fees and the purchase of local materials. Community and educational benefits Low resource impact - no water use, no air emissions, and no waste production. 5.7 kWh/m2/day
13
Benefits - Solar Plant Example:
250 MW Moapa Southern Paiute Solar Project Commissioned 3/17/17 Occasioned by closing of Reid Gardner coal plant First utility-scale solar plant built on tribal land
