1 Energy Forms and Transformations

2 Energy is the ability to do work or to cause change.
Remember …. Energy is the ability to do work or to cause change.

3 Potential Energy Energy stored due to an object’s position.
Wound up Spring

4 Kinetic Energy Energy in motion Wood Burning Running Rocks Falling

5

6 Chemical Energy Energy that is released during a chemical reaction or change. Examples: Battery Digestion Burning Wood/Fuel

7 Chemical Energy How is a Battery a chemical change?
How is Digestion a chemical change? How is Burning wood a chemical change?

8

9 Electrical Energy Energy in the form of electricity. Energy from flowing electrons. Examples: To light a bulb Turn a motor Run a hairdryer

10

11 Radiant or Light Energy
Energy in the form of electromagnetic waves. Examples: Visible Light/Sunlight (What you see) X-Rays Microwaves UV Light

12

13 Mechanical Energy Movement of objects or substances from one place to another. Examples: Moving Cars Waterfalls Running Wind Gears turning

14

15 Thermal Energy The energy of heat.
Always transfers from hotter objects to colder objects. Examples: Heating food Drying clothes Heat from a hairdryer

16

17 Sound Energy Movement of waves trouch a substance or object caused by vibrations Examples: Laugh, scream, yell Radio, TV noise Anything with sound

18 Radiant/Light

20 What does the Law of Conservation of Energy state?

21 Law of Conservation of Energy
The law states: Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. The total amount of the energy does not change. For example: Let’s look at a flashlight. It runs on batteries. The battery has chemical energy. When the flashlight is turned on, the chemical energy is first transformed into electrical energy and then into light energy.

22 Energy Transformations
Energy transformation is the process of changing energy from one form to another.

23 What does “Transform” mean?
Someone explain what a transformer is or does?

24 So if transform means to “change”…
Energy can be changed from one type to another.  For example, as water falls over a waterfall, its gravitational potential energy is first transformed into kinetic energy There are 2 types of energy transformations Natural Man-Made

25 Natural Energy Transformations
Sunlight (radiant) converts to chemical energy in plants through the process of photosynthesis Trees then use this chemical energy to grow. And we can use this energy as biomass!!

26 Machine or man-made transformations:
Electric motors, such as those in power tools, blenders, and washing machines, convert electrical energy into mechanical energy through the interaction of magnetic fields. When you plug in a drill (electrical), this activates the magnetic field, which turns the motor. The motor causes the drill to move! (mechanical energy)

27 Forms of Energy are once again:
Chemical Electrical Radiant Mechanical Thermal Sound mechanical electrical sound

28 Examples of Energy Transformations
Due to the Law of Conservation of Energy, energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Meaning, energy just changes forms! Let’s go through the examples on the right. Have a class discussion about how the forms change

29 Electrical Mechanical Thermal
Hair Dryer Electrical Mechanical Thermal

30 Chemical Electrical Radiant
Flashlight Chemical Electrical Radiant

31 Describe the energy transformations needed for you to watch your favorite TV show at home.
plants/animals die and become fossil fuel (coal) radiant energy chemical energy (photosynthesis) Coal is converted to electrical energy Electrical energy is converted to radiant (light) & mechanical energy (sound) by TVs. Outlets in homes provide electrical energy Power lines transport electrical energy to homes

32 Let’s take this one step further: What are the energy transformations in an electrical power plant?

33 The energy transformations in an electrical power plant:
Coal is burned Water is heatedSteam turns the blades of a turbine Turbine spins coil in generator Generator produces electricity

34 Summary Energy exists in a cycle and transforms from one form to another. Energy transformations can be natural or man-made. Energy transformations can be simple or complex with a just few or many steps. When we take energy and change it into usable electricity, a TURBINE is used. This device changes the energy by rotating it.

35 Energy is never created or destroyed
Energy is never created or destroyed. It is just transformed or changed from one form to another!
