1 Energy We Got the Power!!

2 What is Energy? Energy is the ability to make things move.
It is known as the ability to do work. Energy is needed to cause change and get things done.

3 Forms of Energy Thermal Energy Mechanical Energy
The energy of moving particles Example: Hot soup has a lot of thermal energy Ice water has less thermal energy Mechanical Energy Energy of moving objects Examples: ball moving down a hill, fish swimming in a lake, flowing water

4 Forms of Energy Electrical Energy Energy of moving electric charges
Can move through wires Examples: lamps, toasters, computers

5 Types of Energy Chemical Energy
Energy stored in the bonds that hold atoms together in molecules This energy is released when molecules undergo chemical reactions Examples: Food, fuels, and batteries all have stored chemical energy.

6 Types of Energy Electromagnetic Energy
Energy that travels as waves through matter or through empty space Energy the Earth gets from the sun is this type. You can see it as light and feel it as heat Examples: Microwaves and radio waves

7 Types of Energy Nuclear Energy
Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. Nuclear energy is released when these forces are overcome and particles are either added or removed from the nucleus

8 Energy Transfers Energy can move from one place to another
Energy can change from one form to another. You can feel the transfer of thermal energy as heat. A change from one form of energy to another is called energy transformation. This allows us to use energy in different ways

9 Energy Transformations
Examples of Energy Transformations Green plants transform electromagnetic energy in the form of sunlight into food. Food is stored as chemical energy A candle and a match contain stored chemical energy. When you burn them, their chemical energy changes to light and heat.

10 Energy Transformations
Examples: Fan changes electrical energy into mechanical energy Flashlight changes chemical energy stored in a battery into electrical energy and then into light and heat. Hot plate changes electrical energy into thermal energy

11 Energy Transformations
Energy can never be destroyed. The amount of energy before and after an energy transfer or transformation will always be the same. Whenever energy is transformed or transferred, some energy moves into the environment, most often in the form of heat.
