1 WHAT IS ENERGY?

2 What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work or cause change.
It can change the temperature, shape, speed, or direction of an object

3 There are two basic types…
Potential energy is stored energy. Kinetic energy is energy in motion.

4 Potential vs. Kinetic Energy

5 Other forms of energy… Chemical – The energy in chemical bonds that hold atoms together. When chemical bonds are broken, chemical energy is released. All matter has chemical energy. When you digest the pizza you eat, the pizza gives your body energy.

6 Other forms of energy… Elastic – Energy that can be compressed or stretched.

7 Other forms of energy… Electromagnetic – energy of light and other forms of radiation (radio, UV, X-ray); it travels in waves. Thermal – Heat energy. The hotter the object, the faster its molecules are moving.

8 Other forms of energy… Electrical- The energy of moving electrons.
Sound- energy that causes air and other molecules to vibrate in waves.

9 Find the forms of energy in this picture.

10 Find the forms of energy in this picture.

11 1st Law of Thermodynamics
Physical principle that the total amount of energy in a system remains constant, although energy can be changed from one form to another or transferred from one object to another.

12 1st Law of Thermodynamics
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be transferred and transformed.

13 Types of Energy

14 Energy can be transferred and transformed!

15 Energy can be TRANSFORMED!
Energy Transformation occurs when one form of energy is changed into another. Motion energy (Turbines are spinning!) Electrical Energy

16 Energy can be TRANSFORMED!
Electromagnetic (Light and UV) Energy Electrical Energy

17 Another example… As water falls over a waterfall, its gravitational potential energy is first transformed into kinetic energy.

18 Energy can be TRANSFERRED!
An energy transfer happens when the same form of energy is passes from one object to another. Motion Energy Motion Energy

19 Energy can be TRANSFERRED!
Have you ever burned your mouth on sip of hot cocoa or tea? The thermal energy was transferred from the drink (hot) to your mouth (cold) by conduction. Ouch!

20 What’s the difference? Energy form stays the same. Motion  Motion
Transfer Transformation Energy form stays the same. Motion  Motion Energy form changes Gravitational Potential  Motion
