8 Causes of IT “disasters”
Operational failures Natural disasters Human-caused events Other 43% 31% 16% 15% 13% Slide Goal: Review and establish the business continuity challenges organizations face. Its important to establish the causes or downtime. Most associate the need for DR is when “disaster” strikes, i.e. superstorm sandy, Katrina, SF earthquakes, etc. In reality, most causes of down time are due to operational failures. 12% 10% 9% 4% 5% 3% 1% 1% 1% 1% IT hardware failure Network failure IT software failure Hurricane Flood Winter storm Fire Earthquake Human error Malicious outsider Malicious insider Chemical spill Terrorism Other Power failure Source: Forrester “The State of Business Technology Resiliency Q2 2014”, May 12, 2014

9 Common challenges Difficult to protect complex environments and applications Extensive recovery times result in loss of revenue Testing DR policies can become disruptive to production workloads Protecting an entire environment can be costly Slide Goal: Review and establish the DR challenges organizations face. Protecting Windows, Linux, VMware, Hyper-V typically requires multiple solutions. Companies leaving some systems unprotected is a normal occurrence Not all solutions provide n-tier application aware replication, so replication can often be a burden that take longer than expected. Even if using AWS, customers still are required to maintain that subscription. This usually also means having to manage a subscription for the cloud provider and DR service. This cane create some pain during initial setup, performing recoveries, receiving support and paying the bills. Having a solution isn’t enough if it cant recover an environment in a sufficient amount of time.

10 Overcome challenges Protection of any platform, regardless of location
Certified support for Microsoft and third-party applications Class-leading RPO and RTO Test DR plans without impacting your business Protect critical and lower tier applications at lower costs What do businesses need in a product to overcome these challenges? A solution that can: Protect their entire infrastructure, Windows and Linux, regardless if they are physical machines or virtual (Hyper-V or VMware) Can provide application consistent protection for all their applications Provide recovery points and times that can meet their business needs Free up resources and reduce CAPEX and OPEX Be able to verify their DR capabilities by testing them without impacting

11 Site Recovery Beyond DR Why Microsoft

12 OMS Site Recovery technology
SaaS-based disaster recovery With OMS, customers can leverage the technology offered by Site Recovery to over come the challenges of Disaster recovery. Automated replication and policy-based protection One-click orchestrated recovery Seamless integration with Azure services Remote health monitoring Multi-tier, application-consistent recoveries No-impact DR testing

13 Communication and replication
Simplified deployment Quick and easy Recovery on your terms SaaS-based offering Communication and replication Replication channel Setting up Site Recovery is much simpler then other products in the market. Aside from setting up on premises components, all of the management, agent deployment (VMware only) and setup are all configured from the Azure portal, giving customers the flexibility to access their DR plan.

14 Enterprise-grade protection
Customizable policies Application aware Multi-VM consistency OMS Site Recovery gives customers the flexibility they need in protecting different parts of their datacenter. Critical applications can be with more stringent requirements can be set to have lower RPO and longer retention, while lower tier applications can be a little more relaxed. Site Recovery’s replication uses application consistent snapshots to ensure application health when recovering both single and multi-tier applications. Additionally, Multi-VM consistency is available when all of the machines in the protection group are running the same workload. All machines will be recovered to the same data point. This is available whether you're replicating VMware VMs, or Windows/Linux physical servers.

15 Test without impact Non-disruptive testing Verify recovery plans
Gain peace of mind Many solutions available in the market make it difficult for customers to test their DR plans. By not testing a DR plan regularly, companies may find it difficult to perform an actual failover (recovery) of their workloads. One of the key advantages Site Recovery has is its non-disruptive testing, meaning it will not disrupt the continuous replication of business critical applications to the secondary site. Testing recovery plans more often, leads to successful recovery when the time comes to recover a business to be fully operational. By testing and knowing their DR plan works, customers will have peace of mind.

16 Extend your solution Utilize integrated Azure services
Add automated scripting using Automation Connect via ExpressRoute As a disaster recovery solution born in Azure, ASR can leverage the services of other services available in Azure. Key is automation, another pillar of OMS, enables customers to automate predefined or custom scripts to run anywhere during or post recovery. Connecting to ExpressRoute can remove traditional blockers in networking when sending massive amounts of data to Azure, Disaster Recovery is a perfect example, as moving TBs of data when pushing the initial data to Azure, or when performing a failback, post disaster.

17 Site Recovery Beyond DR Why Microsoft
As we continue, we want the customer to think beyond using OMS and Azure as strictly a DR solution, a solution you only use when there is downtime, as it can do much more then that.

18 Seamless migration no matter the source
Migrate individual applications or entire datacenters Leverage Azure’s hyper-scale model Auto convert AWS, VMware, and other workloads Creating new VMs and applications in Azure is a relatively easy process. Moving existing workloads is another story. Site Recovery enables one-click migrations of heterogeneous environments, doing so with near seamless cutover, reducing the impact on production users. Migrate applications from multiple environments - VMware, Hyper-V, physical and Amazon Web Services Gateway to leverage Azure’s hyper-scale model offering improvement in management of customer infrastructure Reduce the burden IT has with aging infrastructure by drastically reducing both capital and operational expenditures when shutting down on premises workloads once they are moved to Azure Same replication as Disaster Recovery: so if the customers has already replicated the data over for DR, and want to migrate, they can do so without replicating data again.

19 Built for testing Spin up test environments at a moment’s notice
Certify upgrades and patches Reduce IT management costs Azure’s hyper-scale model, with near limitless compute and storage are a perfect match for customer’s highly varied DevTest needs. Customers can test replicated copies of their production workloads in Azure, without impacting production users, or test new versions of applications while maintaining updated production data. Once the updates have been validated within the test environment, customers can seamlessly migrate them into production and with a single click, shut down the test environment.

20 Beyond DR Why Microsoft Site Recovery

21 Unlocks Azure Services
5/9/2018 5:37 AM Why DR using OMS + Azure? Single provider Simplicity Hybrid design Unlocks Azure Services Slide Goal: Reestablish why using Azure for a DR location is the most ideal beyond the cost saving. Single Provider: Microsoft certifies its applications will work with Site Recovery and within Azure. Single vendor to pay and receive support from. Heterogeneity: Leverage one solution for a mixes environment where multiple solutions would normally be required. Hybrid: Replicating workloads to Azure and spinning them there temporarily or permanently can help any company with their goals of offloading to the cloud. Skies the limit: Once in Azure, customers can leverage many of the empowering solutions offered by Microsoft. Leverage a native, first-party disaster recovery solution from Azure, a trusted cloud service provider Support heterogeneous environments—Hyper-V, VMware, Windows, Linux, and physical servers—with Azure’s cross-platform functionality Quickly achieve a hybrid strategy by replicating on- premises workloads to Azure OMS’s availability solutions provide a direct path to the cloud, unlocking the innovation it delivers © 2013 Microsoft Corporation.
