Elcometer 500 Over the past few years we have extensively researched the coatings on concrete market. This research indicates that past experience of coating on concrete gauges has led users to be cautious of the technology. Areas of particular concern include: The cost of replacement probes The amount of force required to take a reading The speed of measurement The need to set ‘gates’ or a ‘range’ to avoid false measurements The measurement accuracy
5
Elcometer 500 The findings of our research have been incorporated within the development of the Elcometer 500. We believe we have designed a gauge which alleviates these concerns and is: Accurate and reliable Intuitive and easy-to-use Fit for purpose Cost effective
6
Elcometer 500 Using state of the art ultrasonic technology, the Elcometer 500 can accurately, repeatably, reliably and non-destructively measure coatings, from 150µm up to 10mm (6 to 390mils) thick‡. ‡ Epoxy coatings The measurement range of the Elcometer 500 is determined by the coating’s ability to transmit the ultrasonic pulse. As the coating’s absorbency increases, the measurement range of the gauge decreases.

Elcometer 500 Probes
13
Elcometer 500 Probes Two Elcometer 500 coating thickness probes are available, depending on the thickness of the coating being measured: C1 C2 C1 Coating Thickness Probe: For measuring coatings from 0.15 to 4mm (6 to 150mils) thick‡ C2 Coating Thickness Probe: For measuring coatings from 0.75 to 10mm (30 to 390mils) thick‡ Part Number Description T500-C1 C1 Coating Thickness Probe; Scale 1: 0.15 – 4mm (6 – 150mils) T500-C2 C2 Coating Thickness Probe; Scale 2: 0.75 – 10mm (30 – 390mils) ‡ Epoxy coatings, thickness on other materials may vary
14
Elcometer 500 Probes As with any coating thickness gauge, probes wear out as they are in contact with the surface. This is even more so with ultrasonic probes as the user is required to drag or scrub the probe over the surface to ensure an accurate reading is taken - leading to greater wear. With competitors’ gauges, this can lead to costly repairs or the need to purchase a new probe.
15
Elcometer 500 Probes But…Elcometer 500 Coating Thickness Probes are different. Probe Tip Elcometer 500 probes have replaceable probe tips which can be quickly and easily replaced by the user in the field, as and when they wear down no need to return the probe for repair saving time and money
16
Elcometer 500 Probes The gauge automatically checks for probe tip wear each time it is switched on and a probe is connected and informs the user when the probe tip is wearing thin and should be replaced. If the probe tip wear is greater than 0.7mm but less than 1mm: The user will be prompted to check the probe tip for wear or damage. After inspection, the user can choose to continue with the current probe tip or fit a new tip. If the probe tip wear is greater than 1mm: The user will be prompted to replace the probe tip. Check Probe Tip For Wear Replace Probe Tip
17
Elcometer 500 Probes Each Elcometer 500 probe is supplied with a probe tip fitted. Replacement packs are available to purchase as optional accessories. Probe Tip Part Number Description T C1 Coating Thickness Probe; Replacement Tip (Pack of 2) T C2 Coating Thickness Probe; Replacement Tip (Pack of 2) Probes are also supplied with measurement foils for verifying the gauge / probe accuracy and performance and a test certificate.
18
Elcometer 500 Probes Elcometer 500 probes have also been ergonomically designed to minimise the amount of force required to take a measurement which: Reduces the rate of probe wear Allows the user to measure continuously and over longer periods of time Reduces the risk of damage to the coating, or compression of the coating, during test
19
Taking a Reading
20
Taking a Reading Taking valid and accurate coating thickness measurements using the Elcometer 500 is simple and easy; Simply calibrate the gauge using one of the three calibration methods available, apply couplant to the test surface and place the probe on the surface. The coating thickness value displayed is the average of over 100 individual measurement samples – not just one, which gives the user confidence in the thickness reading and allows the gauge to be less susceptible to substrate roughness.
21
Taking a Reading The signal strength indicator provides a visual indication of the stability of the reading and to avoid false readings, the gauge will only display a coating thickness if the signal strength indicator is green. Furthermore, the gauge will tell you if the coating thickness is outside the measurement range of the probe connected – it will not display a reading.
22
Taking a Reading Unlike other coatings on concrete gauges, with the Elcometer 500, the user does not have to set ‘gates’ or a ‘range’ to avoid low or non-repeatable readings. Some gauges have to be set up to ignore readings below a set minimum thickness or above a set maximum thickness value by setting ‘gates’ or a measurement ‘range’ – this is not the case with the Elcometer 500. By setting ‘gates’ or a measurement ‘range’, the user may not be able to determine if a coating is too thin or too thick, as the gauge has been programmed to ignore such values.
23
Taking a Reading Whilst the Elcometer 500 can measure up to 10mm (250mils) of a typical epoxy coating, the gauge/probe’s overall measurement range is determined by the coating's formulation. More sound absorbent coatings such as rubber and coatings with high levels of 'aggregate‘ may reduce the measurement range of the gauge. The Elcometer Technical Department offers a sampling service. On receipt of coated samples, we will test the measurement capabilities of the gauge / probe and provide a report on the achievable measuring range for the coating.
24
Calibration
25
Calibration The Elcometer 500 has a choice of three calibration methods; 1-Point; a reading is taken on a substrate with a coating of known thickness and adjusted accordingly. Velocity Entry; direct entry of the known sound-velocity of the coating. If a sample of the coating with known thickness is not available or the sound-velocity of the coating is not known, the user can create their own calibration standard using the Elcometer 500 Coating Calibration Mould (CCM).
26
Calibration At the end of the ‘1-Point’ and ‘Velocity Entry’ calibration procedures, the coating calibration can be saved in the gauge memory for future use and calibration using the third available method; Coating Material; calibration using the known sound-velocity of a coating material as selected by the user from one of two pre-defined lists stored in the gauge memory. ‘Generic Materials’ or; ‘User Materials’
27
Calibration Coating Material/Generic Materials; choose from Epoxy, PVC, Rubber, Polyurethane & Bitumen Coating Material/User Materials; a list of up to 64 user defined coating materials with unique sound-velocities and names, created by either; Saving ‘1-Point’ or ‘Velocity Entry’ calibrations Using the Elcometer 500 Coating Calibration Mould to determine the sound-velocity of the coating material
28
Calibration Using ElcoMaster®, saved ‘User Materials’ lists can be transferred to other Elcometer 500 gauges, at any time.
29
Elcometer 500 Coating Calibration Mould (CCM)
30
Elcometer 500 CCM To calibrate the Elcometer 500, the thickness of the coating or the sound-velocity must be known. If the sound-velocity is not known and a sample of the coating with known thickness is not readily available, the user can create their own calibration standard using the Elcometer 500 Coating Calibration Mould (CCM).
31
Elcometer 500 CCM The Elcometer 500 CCM is a steel mould with two chambers - a sample chamber and an overflow chamber - which can be used to determine the sound-velocity of coating materials for calibration purposes. Sample Chamber Overflow Chamber Part Number Description T Coating Calibration Mould (CCM)
32
Elcometer 500 CCM Simply place the CCM on a flat, horizontal surface and fill the sample chamber with the test coating. Using the plastic scraper supplied, scrape over the coating allowing the excess to fall into the overflow chamber then allow the coating to dry.
33
Elcometer 500 CCM When fully cured, using an Elcometer 456 ferrous coating thickness gauge - calibrated using a calibration foil and the base of the CCM as a zero plate - measure and record the dry film thickness at the centre of the coating in the sample chamber. The DFT value can be written on the dried coating in the overflow chamber.
34
Elcometer 500 CCM Using the Elcometer 500 gauge with probe connected, select ‘1 Point’ calibration and take a measurement of the coating in the sample chamber. Press ‘Adjust’ and enter the dry film thickness value - measured using the Elcometer then follow the instructions on-screen to save the calibration into the ‘User Materials’ list.
35
Elcometer 500 CCM The Elcometer 500 gauge can now be calibrated using the ‘Coating Material’ calibration method and selecting the user defined coating from the ‘User Materials’ list. Up to 64 user defined coatings can be stored in the gauge memory. Using ElcoMaster®, saved ‘User Materials’ lists can be transferred to other Elcometer 500 gauges, at any time.
36
Elcometer 500 CCM By using the Elcometer 500 CCM together with a certified Elcometer 456 Ferrous Coating Thickness Gauge, the Elcometer 500 gauge calibration is traceable to National and International Standards.

Summary
38
Elcometer 500 Over the past few years, we have been extensively researching the coatings on concrete market. This research indicates that past experience of coating on concrete gauges has led users to be cautious of the technology. Areas of particular concern include: The cost of replacement probes User replaceable probe tips - no need to return the gauge for costly repair or replacement The amount of force required to take a reading Ergonomically designed probes for ease of use over prolonged periods and to minimise the force required to take a reading The speed of measurement Capable of taking more than 60 readings per minute in standard mode, increasing to over 140 readings per minute in high speed scan mode - increasing productivity and reducing inspection times The need to set ‘gates’ or a ‘range’ to avoid false measurements No needs to set ‘gates’ or a ‘range’ – simply calibrate the gauge, apply couplant and take a reading

Competitors Measurement Performance Our tests indicated:
The Positector 200 gauge under test displayed a reading even when the coating thickness was outside the quoted measuring range of the probe connected. These readings were often significantly higher or significantly lower than the actual coating thickness. The Positector 200 probes tested often did not displaying readings within the quoted accuracy of their probe. The selection of the Positector probe can have a significant affect on the accuracy of the Positector reading. Both gauges clearly show that different coatings can have a significant effect on the range of the probe. This is due to the sound absorbent nature of each coating.
59
Competitors Measurement Performance Our tests indicated:
The Elcometer 500 does not display a reading when the coating thickness is outside the measuring range of the probe. The Elcometer 500 probes tested were capable of taking valid readings within the quoted measuring range of the probe. 100% of the valid readings were within the quoted accuracy of the gauge / probe combination.
