and Hoist the MemberSHIP Sails!
Gather Your Team and Hoist the MemberSHIP Sails! WELCOME all attendees to workshop! We are here to get you inspired to Hoist the MemberSHIP Sails within your club! Definition of “hoisting”: to raise or lift: Our goal is to provide some ideas, information that will help all of us to raise up our clubs, and lift the energy, enthusiasm, and engagement of our members. to raise to one's lips and drink; with gusto!: When our clubs have the members they need to deliver our mission, and those members are happy, it is truly reason to raise a toast in celebration!
2
What does it take for your sailing team to be successful?
Governor Stephanie’s theme is “Team Work makes the Dream Work”. So lets think about clubs for a moment as teams --- in this case, a sailing team. What do you think the characteristics would be of a successful sailing team that is crewing the S.S. MemberSHIP? TAKE SHOUT OUTS FROM THE ATTENDEES
3
Clarity of purpose, discipline, focus, belief, trust, a willingness to work together.
Here are a few we came up with: Clarity of purpose : meaning, everyone knows what the mission is. Focus : our mission is at the center of all the club does. Belief: that as a team we can get the job done and that the work we do is important. Trust: Trust that those who have been given a job to do will get it done A willingness to work together: no one can sail these seas alone, and the cruise is much more fun when you’re with people you like to be with!
4
The Soroptimist club experience of today is not the same as the club experience when many of us joined. There are many more choices demanding the time and attention of our current and prospective members. The tools we have to connect with members and our community have changed. The needs of our members have changed. So with these changing winds, in order to remain as a vital organization, we need to adapt. Our clubs need to adjust their sails so that we can continue to move our ship forward. If we don’t, we could end up adrift in the seas.
5
We change when we think change will make us better.
Stronger. More successful. Adjusting our sails means trying new approaches. It means change. Change is not a four letter word. We shouldn’t be afraid of change or think that if we ignore the changing world that our club will be able to go on as it always has. Adjusting our sails can help us reach our destination faster. We have to understand and believe that by adjusting our sails we can be better, stronger and more successful as a club and as an organization. So – what is the change we are preparing for?

48% of clubs participated
TOP CHOICE: Invest in the dreams of one million women and girls through access to education by 2031. I believe you should all be aware of the outcomes from last year’s Big Goal exercise and survey. 48% of all clubs in SIA participated to help identify what we would like to see as our organization’s BIG GOAL to achieve by the year And the top choice of all those that participated was to invest in the dreams of one million women and girls through access to education. This goal was identified by clubs as the focus we need as a team in order to move this ship forward.
7
We need to build our numbers to strengthen our organization
Over the next month clubs will be completing the second phase of the process, helping identify what achieving that goal will mean for our clubs and our members. Hopefully you have all either already had a club discussion on the Big Goal Survey 2 or have it planned to take place before the end of December. But one thing we DO know is that in order to reach a goal that is anywhere near that number it will take a lot more Soroptimist ships in the SIA Sea, and a lot more members than we have today! We need to build our numbers to strengthen our organization
8
Clubs said we need to focus on our membership experience.
In addition, those completing last year’s survey indicated that one of the requisites to growing our numbers in order to be able to achieve that big goal is to focus on membership experience. Meaning……. Are members having fun? Do they feel they are making a difference? Is there clarity of purpose , focus, belief, trust, and a willingness to work together? So – our charge is to really tackle these two things with everything we’ve got: growing our membership, and creating a positive membership experience for all involved!
9
NWR Goal: Increase Membership by 25%
Go from 2,419 to 3,053 members by 6/30/18 So just what are we talking about in terms of membership numbers in order to turn this Northwestern Region MemberSHIP around? Governor Stephanie is challenging ALL of our clubs to increase their membership number by 25% and have at least 15 members by June 30, That would increase our region total from 2,419 which we had at the end of this past June to 3,053 members by the end of this biennium – a net increase of 634 members across NWR! I know you’re probably already doing the math in your head to try to figure out what that means for your specific club? Not to worry – we’ve already done the math. Let’s take a look. (REVIEW SLIDE SPECIFIC FOR THE DISTRICT YOU’RE IN.)

Goal to charter and have at least 15 members by 6/30/18
ONLINE CLUB Member Goal by 6/30/18 Goal to charter and have at least 15 members by 6/30/18 Contact Dawn Christiansen Cuellar In addition to growing our traditional clubs, we are also looking at the creation of an online club for those individuals who may not be able to attend a regular club meeting or are in a location where a club is not available. This group will do their work virtually – online – as well as by conference call, determining options they have to deliver our dream programs and help improve the lives of women and girls. Extension Chair Dawn Christiansen Cuellar is leading up this effort, so reach out to her if you are interested in this option or know someone who might be.

Additional clubs! Can be accomplished by an individual, a small group, or a club. Can take as little as four weeks. Only 12 charter members required. Additional charter members may be added for 90 days after the club has been chartered. Could your community support an additional club that meets at a different time / different day? Do you have a member who has moved to a community where there is no club? Is there the possibility of a work place club in your community (e.g. school, college, healthcare, corporation)? Contact Extension Chair Dawn Christiansen Cuellar Building new Soroptimist clubs is essential for maintaining the vibrancy of our organization. When an individual, a small group, or even an entire club sponsors a new club, it can be a very rewarding experience that enhances leadership skills and provides a sense of purpose. Every new club adds to our network and makes our organization more dynamic and diverse. AND – with our updated chartering tools, the development of one can take as little as four weeks and requires only 12 charter members. Remember, that in today's world, enthusiasm can wane quickly if we don't strike while the iron is hot! And once chartered, additional members that join up to three months after the charter date will still be considered charter members. So –Is there opportunity for an additional Soroptimist club in your own community ? Do you have members who have moved to other communities where there is not a club who would be the starting flame for a new club? How about the concept of a workplace club – such as a large business, school, college or healthcare facility in your community – where workers could be their own club and meet in their facility? If you have ideas on any of these, contact our Region Extension Chair Dawn Christiansen Cuellar.

SIA MemberSHIP Campaign
For Our reward for growing our organization and our clubs is the survival of Soroptimist. But of course there is recognition and awards from SIA as well. This year’s MemberSHIP campaign runs for a full 12 months – June 1, 2016 through May 31, 2017 – and will be looking for the following: Highest % of new members added by clubs and regions Highest % of new/charter members RETAINED by clubs from last year….Once we have new members we want to hold on to them! Largest % of net growth by clubs. Largest number of new clubs chartered within a region. So let’s now take all this information and talk about what we can do within our clubs to recruit new members and retain the ones we have so we can achieve that 25% goal that Governor Stephanie has set.
17
Recruitment Table Exercise
Identify Scribe and Spokesperson 15 minutes to discuss recruitment questions We’re going to talk first about recruitment, so take a look at that sheet [SEE Table Exercise Handout]. At your tables (or with groups of 5 -6 people around you), first identify a table scribe and spokesperson. We want one paper for the table collected at the end so we can provide out full reporting for all districts to all clubs. Take 15 minutes to talk about and provide your input on the questions asked. Don’t get hung up on any one question too long, so someone in the group make sure that you keep moving through all the questions. We’ll give you a 5 and 2 minute warning.
18
Retention Table Exercise
15 minutes to discuss retention questions It’s time to move on to the Retention question list [SEE Table Exercise Handout]. Same drill. You can use the same scribe and reporter, or select a new one. You’ve got 15 minutes to go through those questions, so don’t get hung up on any one question or you won’t get through them all.
19
10 minutes to share feedback
Sharing 10 minutes to share feedback Okay – let’s take 5 minutes to hear some feedback about Recruitment (Select one group to respond to question #1, one group to respond to question #2, and so on. Limit each response to seconds.) Now let’s move on to getting some feedback on how you responded to the Retention (Same as above, selecting other groups that didn’t provide feedback first time if needed). Limit each response to second).
20
If we change the way we look at things, the way things look will change.
In summary, our goal as Soroptimists is to create a beautiful, gorgeous world for little girls like these, having access to the education and resources they need to be able to achieve their dreams, with lives that offer calm seas and smooth sailing. It will mean looking at things in our clubs a bit differently….But as the quote says here, “If we change the way we look at things, the way things look will change.”

Our Soroptimist cruise can have a gorgeous ending.
Let’s join together in making it so. When we know we have done all we can to ensure the legacy of Soroptimist and our mission for future generations like those little girls, our own personal Soroptimist cruise will have a gorgeous ending. Let’s join together in making it so!
