PLOT ALL THE CONTINENTS ON ONE MAP PLOT DIFFERENT DESTINATION TYPES ACROSS ALL OF THE CONTINENTS (AT LEAST 3 OF EACH TYPE PER CONTINENT E.G A CITY, NATURAL AND PURPOSE BUILT DESTINATION IN NORTH AMERICA FOR EXAMPLE) ON YOUR SECOND MAP YOU MUST USE A KEY FOR THIS EXERCISE.

5 P2 For P2 you have to produce a report which outlines different types of holidays available in long-haul destinations that meet specific UK visitor motivations As well as the five destination types we have discussed above we need to look at where they can stay when they get there and what is a traveller’s motivation for wanting to visiting a specific destination.

7 SHORT BREAK Yes, you can take a short break to a long haul destination! Often chosen by couples or friends and less likely to involve taking children who have money to spend which fit around busy jobs Reason – shopping, sightseeing, weekend in the sun….. Where? NEW YORK DUBAI HONG KONG

8 SINGLE CENTRE (hotel based)
Usually hotel based Staying in one place Resorts that are popular often have lots of facilities so that guests don’t have to leave which restricts sightseeing opportunities

9 TWIN OR MULTI CENTRE This type of holiday takes in several destinations Customers can spend a week or a few days somewhere before moving on to another place, often by air Example London to Dubai then Dubai to Sri Lanka Sri Lanka to Maldives

10 TOURING Tours may be fly/drive, rail or coach
Can be organised for you or planned independently Allows many destinations to be visited and relies heavily on local transport in these destinations

11 STOPOVERS Many tourists opt to stop over on long journeys to break a lengthy flight Traditional stopovers on the way to Australia are Singapore or Hong Kong Generally people want short transfers from the airport to their hotel on a stopover and may stay just one night or a few nights

12 CRUISING This is an option for those who have more time to travel
Popular choices is crossing the Atlantic, spending a few days in New York for example then flying back Fly cruises such as to The Caribbean and Asia are offered by many of the major cruise lines where they will fly there and then cruise the destination before flying back Prices usually include accommodation, meals, activities and entertainment on board World cruises are appealing to many but are very expensive and involve a long time away from home so those who are of working age are less likely to book

VISITING FRIENDS OR FAMILY EDUCATIONAL VISITOR

15 VISITOR MOTIVATION WHEN PEOPLE ARE BOOKING A LONG HAUL HOLIDAY, THEY ARE MOST LIKELY TO BE THINKING ABOUT THE TYPE OF HOLIDAY THEY WOULD LIKE. THIS IS WHAT WE CALL VISITOR MOTIVATION. MANY LONG HAUL HOLIDAYS ARE OFFERED AS A PACKAGE. HOWEVER, PEOPLE WILL ALSO BOOK INDEPENDENTLY AS IT CAN BE CHEAPER AS OFFERS THE TOURIST MORE FLEXIBILITY TO TRAVEL TO A WIDE VARIETY OF PLACES. TRAVEL AGENTS HAVE SEEN A HUGH RISE IN TAILOR MADE HOLIDAYS FOR LONG HAUL TRAVEL HOWEVER AND MANY PREFER THE SECURITY OF BOOKING VIA AN AGENT.

A HOLIDAY SIMPLY TO RELAX MAY BE A SIMPLE BEACH HOLIDAY IN THE SUN OR A SPA HOLIDAY

18 MOTIVATION - SPECIAL OCCASION
THE NATURAL ATTRACTIONS OF A DESTINATION SUCH AS A BEACH ARE OFTEN REASONS WHY PEOPLE HOLD SPECIAL OCCASIONS THERE SUCH AS WEDDINGS ACCORDING TO THE GUARDIAN, OVER 400,000 BRIDES AND GROOMS WERE MARRIED IN A TROPICAL LOCATION IN THE LAST TWO YEARS IT IS USUALLY CHEAPER (ON AVERAGE £6000 COMPARED TO £15,000 ON AN AVERAGE UK WEDDING)

19 MOTIVATION – ACTIVITIES/SPECIAL INTEREST
Customers may want to pursue a specific activity or hobby:- DIVING TREKKING CYCLING CLIMATE AND LANDSCAPE IS A BIG FACTOR HERE AS CERTAIN ACTIVITIES MAY NOT BE ADVISABLE IN VERY HOT OR IF THE TERRAIN IS UNSUITABLE.

20 MOTIVATION – ATTRACTIONS/ENTERTAINMENT/ SHOPPING
The desire by many to visit a destination is to see attractions, to be entertained or to go shopping such as:- THEME PARKS RESORTS WITH CHILDREN’S CLUBS AND EVENING ENTERTAINMENT SHOPPING CENTRES – NEW YORK/HONG KONG LAS VEGAS – ENTERTAINMENT CITY!

21 MOTIVATION -HISTORY/CULTURE
Tourists are often motivated to visit long haul destinations to experience history/culture. This might also include a desire to become immersed in:- Language Lifestyle Food and Drink Gap year students wishing to ‘travel’ with typical destinations being Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Fiji and Australia.

Escape from busy lives to experience a totally different environment such as:- Safari holiday Eco resort -

23 MOTIVATION – THE MEDIA Popular films attract fans and film lovers to its location. GROUP MIND MAP Which films have you seen (or TV programmes) that might make visitors want to travel there?

24 MOVIATION - HEALTH TOURISM
This is a popular trend, particularly for non essential treatments or cosmetic surgery. Often they are cheaper abroad and they offer accommodation, transport and treatment in one package. Indian private hospitals are often cheaper for things like hip replacements.

25 MOTIVATION - EDUCATION
Many tourists visit long haul destinations to learn a language or undertake educational trips abroad as part of their course. South America is popular for those wanting to learn Spanish and want to travel further afield than just Spain to do so.
