Choosing your Career route into Health & Social Care
Welcome to the training written by Claire Grimwood , Careers Yorkshire & Humber. This training is suitable for Year 10-13 Introduce the importance of looking at the jobs available in the area to help make a careers decision. Explain that each learner will leave the lesson with a Shape Your Future booklet giving further information ©CYH

How are we going to do this?
Introduce the Shape Your Future resources Use the Shape your Future booklet to analyse how the labour market is changing Analyse the current growth sectors in the Humber labour market and routes into the careers associated with the Health & Social Care sector. ©CYH Explain that the Shape Your Future has been developed by local business and Humber LEP. Explain that the resources are available on line

This is the front cover of the booklet. Explain how careers have changed so you have to look at where the jobs are? Are you prepared to move for jobs? How far are you prepared to move? This booklet looks at Humber Area only, but there is similar booklets for South, West and North Yorkshire on Who is thinking of getting a degree? 1 in 4 people in Humber are educated to degree level, but not all are working in a degree level job. There are approx business in the Humber providing over jobs. 15.7% of jobs in the Humber are in Health & Social care Question …What is the Health & Social Care Sector? ©CYH

What is the Health & Social Care sector?
It is about the treatment & support of medical conditions in hospitals , health centres & in the community. It includes Dentists, Nurses, social workers & medical administration

How is the Labour Market Changing?
Group 1 – List the changes happening in the Labour Market now Group 2- List the job types which will be important in the future Group 3- List some of the new job roles not around 20 years ago Group 4 - How are you going to apply for jobs in the future? Exercise 1 Split into 4 groups of learners and give 5 mins to make a list to match group task. (Larger classes may want to have 2 groups of each. EG Group 1x2 groups) Ask at Group 1 to call out some of their answers . ©CYH

Talk through the changes and the jobs available
Talk through the changes and the jobs available . (See page 5 of Shape your Future for a full list of changes in Labour market) Open discussion about how these changes effect Careers in Engineering…. -Technology used in hospitals to help improve diagnosis and rehabilitation. Used to help keep people in their own homes rather than hospital. Technology used to record health statistics remotely eg less visits from district nurses and patients use wearable technology People live longer-Need to have help for physical and mental needs in their homes. NHS does not have resource so more “private homes” being opened. Social workers are going to work with more elderly people as families often live away from parents. More leisure time for elderly people so more jobs in providing ways to fill this time eg Exercise facilitators, Forestry Rangers for walking. Spending money wisely- More people are going to have to plan financially for a longer “old age”. People will be required to advise them. Social workers will help manage finances. Group 2 Job types that will be important in the future Ask at Group 2 to call out some of their answers. (See page 5 of Shape your Future for a full list of changes in Labour market) Open discussion about these jobs. Some jobs high level scientific eg Educating people how to eat well to maintain their health for “old age”(nutritionist), Health service professional eg Physiotherapist, Masseur, Pharmacist. Many jobs at Level 3 to help people maintain their independence 20% of the workforce in Health & Social Care is 55 or over! ©CYH

Remind learners Social Media not invented 15 years ago!! Microwave ovens only came into homes in the mid 1970’s. Mobile phones only became popular in Mid Jobs linked to Health & Social Care include Patient Advocates,Senior Move Managers, Elderly acare Ask at Group 4 to call out some of their answers ©CYH

How will we apply for jobs in the future?
CV- Electronic & Infographics Agencies Electronic Application forms SKYPE/Video interviews Assessment centres -Explain that CV’s will become electronic in the future and using infographics will make them outstanding. Creative industries already use them especially in London! Example on the right shows a infographic CV. More interactive ones will become common pace using technology to make short films and cartoons. -Agencies are specialised for certain careers and will continue to develop specialisms. May test candidates before they take them on the books -All applications will be electronic using Social media and websites…..this is already developing in Degree Apprenticeship recruitment as most companies advertise on their website and twitter only. -Interviews will be held using technology rather than face to face to reduce time and travel costs. -Companies starting to use Assessment Centres to check the skills of candidates both personal traits (leadership, team work etc) and competencies required for the job.

Explain That Shape Your Future Humber has highlighted 12 growth areas in the Humber economy and Engineering is one. Manufacturing is another area.

Read through the 12 different growth areas-
Food & Agriculture 70% of seafood processed in UK comes from Grimsby . Creative & Digital UK is the 4th largest producer of Computer games in the World- Who is making these? Business & Retail Automation is increasing in Business & Retail. Chemicals 120 companies in the area employ over 6000 people. Construction By 2020 YORKS & Humber region will need 3100 new skilled workers . 1 in 3 employers struggling to fill vacancies in electricians, plumbers & ventilation engineers Health & Social Care Nationally predicted growth in jobs is 2.6 million by % of the workforce in Humber is over 55 years old! Manufacturing Y&H largest food production in UK. Manufacturing pays higher wages than national average. 66% of manufacturers plan to recruit a manufacture engineer before 2020 Port & Logistics new employees will be needed nationally by the end of 2017 in these industries. Food uses logistics to be moved quickly Public Sector Includes armed forces, NHS and Councils. Councils invest large parts of their budgets in Adult social care through Care homes, Social Workers Renewables 3 of the largest Wind farms in our area and we have some of the largest engineering projects in the world Visitor Economy 60% of travel sector workforce female. Engineering UK needs more than 1 million new engineers & technicians by 2020 ©CYH

Careers in Health & Social Care
Health & Social Care includes careers in Dentistry, Medicine , Care workers & Social Workers. Administration people needed in specialist health areas. NHS currently needs nurses by 2020 to maintain current staffing levels. 82% of Health & Social work staff are women so need to encourage men into the industry In Y& H only 12% of the workforce is under 25 years old Talk through the slide, explain about skills and useful subjects for this career. How do you get a job in Health & Social Care
Graduate level Higher/Degree Apprenticeship Advanced Apprenticeship Graduate Level. Many professions need a degree level qualification including Nursing. Previously nursing degree funded but from NHS and councils recruit continually. Many degrees like Social work have “industry based” placements which can convert to jobs. Management jobs available at Graduate level in local councils and charities High or Degree apprenticeships Nursing degree apprenticeships to be released September Little information known about it. Currently Nurse practitioner apprenticeships are being piloted at all local hospitals for internal staff only. Predictions suggest many more Professional NHS jobs will be degree apprenticeships and employed by local NHS. Intermediate & Advanced Apprenticeships available after GCSE. Many opportunities locally advertised from September on Log on Move on Lincs2 Lincs4u Also can use This is a site specifically for working in the Humber Renewable industry & Nearly all health & social care organisations offer apprenticeships at both Intermediate & Advanced level for Care support workers, Care workers. etc ©CYH
