3 Cambridge English: KET
Difficulty level: A2 elementary The Key English Test is the easiest of the Cambridge exams. Who is it for? Do this test if you want to know your studies have started well and you have a basic knowledge of reading, writing, speaking and listening. What is the KET test like? The test has three sections: Reading & Writing - 70 minutes, 56 questions Listening - 25 minutes Speaking minutes Score A, B, C (pass), D, E or U (fail) Arrange with your closest test centre. The test can only be taken twice a year, in June and December. How much does it cost to take KET? Fees are set by test centres. Expect to pay around €75 euros.

4 Cambridge English: PET
Difficulty level: B1 / low intermediate The Preliminary English Test is one of the Cambridge ESOL exams. Who is it for? Do this test if you want to know that you have an intermediate level of English. With this level of English you will enjoy holidays in English speaking countries. You should probably continue studying once you have passed the PET exam. What is the PET test like? The test has these sections: Reading and Writing are taken together - 90 minutes Listening - 30 minutes Speaking - an interview, 10 minutes Paper-based or computer-based exams You can do the PET exam on a computer or on paper. The computer-based exam is available once a month. The paper-based exam is only available six times a year. Score ‘pass’, ‘pass with merit’, ‘narrow fail’, or ‘fail’ Level B1 / Alte 2 / low intermediate. Click here to see how it compares with other exams. Where do I take the test? At a test centre. 5 Cambridge English: First ( FCE)
Difficulty level: B2 /Upper Intermediate The First Certificate in English is the most important of the Cambridge exams. What is the FCE test like? The test has five sections: Reading - 60 minutes Writing - 2 essays, 80 minutes Use of English - 45 minutes Listening - 40 minutes Speaking - interview, normally with another candidate, 15 minutes Paper-based or computer-based exams You can do the FCE exam on a computer or on paper. Score A, B, C (pass), D, E or U (fail) FCE A grade pass is accepted for entry to some universities Where do I take the test? Arrange with your closest test centre. When can I take the test? The FCE test can be taken most months in either paper-based or computer-based format. The paper-based test can be taken in March, May, June, August and December. The computer-based test can be taken in February, April, July, August and November. Not all test centres will administer both types of test. How much does it cost to take FCE? 6 Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)
Difficulty level: C1 / advanced Who is it for? If you can communicate with confidence in English for work or study purposes, this is the exam for you. CAE is taken by more than 60,000 people each year in more than 60 countries. CAE is one of the Cambridge exams. What is the CAE test like? The test has five sections: Reading - 75 minutes Writing - 2 or 3 tasks , 120 minutes English in Use - 5 tasks with 50 questions - 60 minutes Listening - 40 minutes, 30 questions Speaking - interview, normally with another candidate, 15 minutes

7 Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)
Score A, B, C (pass), D, E or U (fail) CAE pass is accepted for entry to some universities Paper-based or computer-based exams You can do the CAE exam on a computer or on paper. 8 Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)
Difficulty level: C2 / advanced The Cambridge Proficiency exam is the hardest of the Cambridge exams. Who is it for? Do this test if you really love English. If you pass this test your English is good enough for you to teach English to others. Your English will be good enough to study at any British university. Over 45,000 people in more than 80 countries take the CPE exam each year. What is the CPE test like? The test has five sections: Reading - 4 parts, 90 minutes part 1, 3 texts with 18 gaps part 2, 4 related texts with 2 questions each part 3, text with missing paragraphs part 4, text with multiple choice questions Composition - 2 tasks, 2 hours Use of English - 90 minutes part 1: text with 15 gaps part 2: word formation part 3: gapped sentences Listening - 3 or 4 recordings, 40 minutes part 1: 4 passages with multiple choice questions New! part 2: 1 long passage with gapped text New! 9 IELTS IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. IELTS is required for entry to university in the UK and other countries. Who is it for? IELTS is recognised by universities and employers in many countries, including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. It is also recognised by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies. More than 1.4 million people a year take the test. What is the IELTS test like? You can choose between the Academic or General Training versions of the test. All candidates do the same Listening and Speaking sections. The test has four sections: Listening - 4 sections, 40 questions, 30 minutes Speaking - interview, 15 minutes Reading - different for Academic or General Training - 3 sections, 40 questions, 60 minutes Writing - different for Academic or General Training - pieces of writing, 60 minutes This site also contains vocabulary tests, including practice tests for the academic wordlist, as well as grammar tests that are relevant to IELTS. .

10 IELTS Level and scores Multi-level. You get a score between 1 and 9. Half scores such as 6.5 are possible. Universities often demand an IELTS score of 6 or 7. 11 The TOEFL® exam Test Of English as Foreign Language. The essential exam for entry to universities in the United States. Academic language. Who is it for? The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English to use and understand North American English as it is spoken, written and heard in college and university settings. Most people who take the TOEFL test are planning to study at colleges and universities where instruction is in English. In addition, many government agencies, scholarship programs, and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency. Versions of the TOEFL® test You can do the test on paper or on a computer, depending where you live.The test comes in two formats: paper-based test (PBT) next generation computer-based test (iBT) The iBT is not yet available at every test center. If it is available at your local center then you will have to do it. If not you will do the PBT. There is also an exam for younger students called TOEFL Junior. You can register for the TOEFL® iBT online. How much does the TOEFL test cost to take? Prices of the TOEFL iBT vary in each country ranging from $160 to $240. The paper-based TOEFL is $160.

12 PTE General The Pearson Test of English General (Formerly The London Test of English, these are designed to reward positive achievement in English language learning. The tests consist of two parts: a written paper and an interview.

14 Recognition Levels 4 and 5 are recognised for admission to UK universities and by many international companies. Where do I take the test? At a test center in your country. When can I take a PTE General test? May, June, August, November, December. How much does it cost? The test fees are set by each center.These tests are reasonably priced. The higher level tests are more expensive than the lower level ones. Expect to pay £50 for level A1 and £100 for level 5.
