Ice Age Many landforms in New York were formed long before people lived there. Scientists believe that Earth had several period of very cold weather Such a period is known as an Ice Age

Glaciers The most recent Ice Age probably ended about 10,000 years ago
During that Ice Age, a huge glacier, or thick sheet of ice, moved across most of New York

New York’s Glacier New York’s glacier moved like a giant bulldozer, pushing tons of soil and rock along its path The glacier crawled as far south as Long Island A line of low hills, called moraines, marks where the glacier stopped

Allegany State Park Allegany State Park found in southwestern New York is the only part which was not covered by the glacier Here the steep valleys and pointed hills look different from the land outside the park

The Ice Age Ends Earth warmed up about 10,000 years ago
Water from melting glaciers filled many deep holes dug by the glacier’s rough rocks and created lakes such as Oneida Lake As the ice melted, the glacier dropped soil and rocks it had picked up The mix of soil and rocks is called till Drumlins, smoothly rounded hills, were formed by the melting glacier
