1 Title: 1 Peter 5: Peter the Shepherd Text: 1 Peter 5: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers… By: Pastor Micah Adamson March 19, 2017 1 Peter 5:2a (NIV84) Title

2 The gospel as is framed as the relationship between the Shepherd and His Sheep
Mark 14:27 = Jesus predicted His disciples’ desertion at His death from the OT: Zechariah 13:7 “I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.” John 21:15-17 = John ends with Jesus telling Peter to shepherd His sheep. 1 Peter 5:1-4 = 1 Peter ends with Peter telling pastors to shepherd Jesus’ sheep. Shepherding involves both giving sheep good things and protecting them from bad things.

3 How the good Shepherd shepherds His sheep:
Psalm 23 The good Shepherd: feeds, waters, guides, protects, disciplines, shelters, and comforts the sheep. Protects from: Enemies. John 10 The good Shepherd: knows, protects, leads, shelters, watches over, dies for, gathers, increases, and gives life to the sheep. Protects from: Robbers, wolves, hired shepherds. Ezekiel 34 The good Shepherd: strengthens, heals, binds up, brings back, searches for, rescues, gathers, feeds, waters, shelters, protects, judges between, chooses good under-shepherds for the sheep. Protects from: Hired shepherds (Jude 12); fat sheep, wild beasts, and famine.

4 John 21:15-17 (NIV84) 15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love [agape] me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love [phileo] you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” 16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love [agape] me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love [phileo] you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love [phileo] me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love [phileo] me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love [phileo] you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

5 1 Peter 2:2-3 (NIV84) 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. Spiritual milk = The Lord Jesus is the thing we have tasted is good and should crave more of. Mark 8/John 6 = The disciples missed the point of the feeding miracles = Jesus is our food. Shepherding = Feeding the sheep Jesus.

6 1 Peter 5:1-4 (NIV84) 1To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. Elder (Presbyter) = Shepherd (Pastor) = Overseer (Bishop)

7 Acts 20:17, (NIV84) 17 From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church. 28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. 29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. 31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears. Elder (Presbyter) = Shepherd (Pastor) = Overseer (Bishop)

8 1 Peter 5:5-7 (NIV84) 5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” [Proverbs 3:34] 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. [Psalm 55:22]

9 Psalm 55:22-23a (NIV84) 22 Cast your cares on the Lord
and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall. 23 But you, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of corruption… Casting our cares on God, leads to the righteous not falling (being brought down). But, God brings the wicked down.

10 1 Peter 5:8-11 (NIV84) 8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

11 Parallels to: 1 Peter 5:8-11 (NIV84)
13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 1 Peter 4:7 (NIV84) 7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. Be self-controlled and alert. Stand firm in the faith. Remember that we aren’t suffering alone. Remember that we won’t be suffering forever.

12 Summary of how to resist the Devil from 1 Peter
Control yourself, pay attention, keep your eyes on Jesus and what He did to save you. Remember that you aren’t a lone ranger capable of facing the devil alone, all Christians are going through this. Remember that there will be an end to our struggle against the devil, but not until Jesus returns. Don’t let the devil scare you/trick you into running away from the flock and away from your faith in Christ, where the devil can tear you to shreds. Keep your wits about you in the face of fear. Stand firm in your faith in Christ alone to save you by God’s grace alone for God’s glory alone.

13 James 4:6-10 says the same thing as 1 Peter 5:5-11
Both are expositions of Proverbs 3:34. They agree that humility instead of pride (toward God and man) leads to God lifting us up. James says submit to God, Peter commands submission to elders. They emphasize trusting in God’s grace rather than trusting ourselves. James says we resist the devil by coming to God in humility and repentance for our sin. Which makes resisting the devil a close parallel to resisting sin in Hebrews 12:4. Peter says we resist the devil by self-control, faith, fellowship, and hope for the future.

14 Overlapping roles of a Shepherd: Feeding and Protecting
Feed = Give sheep healthy food (Jesus from the Bible) Protect = Keep sheep from eating unhealthy food You may hear Christians tell you that rebuking the devil and commanding him to leave is the secret to successfully resisting the devil (they will use 1 Peter 5 and James 4 as references). Notice what Peter and James do NOT say here about how to resist the devil. There is no command to tell the devil to leave, nor is there a formula for what to say. Peter and James don’t offer shortcuts or quick fixes for spiritual warfare, so you shouldn’t be distracted by them either.

15 1 Peter 5:12-14 (NIV84) 12 With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it. 13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

16 Conclusion 1 Peter 5:12 (NIV84)
12 With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it. Peter summarizes 1 Peter as: A testimony and encouragement to stand fast in the grace of God. I summarize 1 Peter as: The salvation from God that we have in Jesus is really is gloriously good and worth giving up everything for! Watch out for shortcuts in resisting the devil. The real path to glory is going the hard way through suffering, since that’s the way Jesus went!
