1 The Fort Worth ISD Learning Model
Welcome to the Launch of the Fort Worth ISD Learning Model! Our community has spoken and the Fort Worth ISD has responded. We now have a pk-12 Learning Model for every content area, every course, every educator, every leader, every student.

2 Did You Know? Fort Worth ISD has a Learning Model
Watch Now! Khechara Bradford, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction leads us through a discussion about learning in Fort Worth ISD. (Please click the link to watch the 20 minute video that shares foundational knowledge of the Fort Worth ISD Learning Model.) Two video link options:

3 History of the Fort Worth ISD Learning Model
HOW DID WE GET HERE? This model was not created in isolation by our curriculum and instruction or academic’s teams. This learning model was designed collaboratively through a year long process.

4 FWISD - LRFMP Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3 June 2017
What did we do? This year Fort Worth ISD conducted a Long Range Facilities Master Plan. During this process a large team looked at the building needs to remodel our comprehensive high schools. Instead of starting with Architectures, Fort Worth ISD started with Learning. We began with the thinking that “Instruction Drives Construction”. Before any structural changes we planned, we would think through the learning needs of our students and the learning desires of our community. The 3 phase process started with Community Visioning for Learning (500+ stakeholders), then the collaborative Educational Design Team for Learning (85 stakeholders), and the Learning Environment Planning team. Phase 3 June 2017

From the work done in the came the Fort Worth ISD Learning Model. Four phases of learning include Challenge, Research and Create, Communicate, and Reflect and Grow. The center of the model highlights our beliefs in shared-ownership, leadership, and collaboration with the core focused on relationships. Talk at your table…. What are your ideas about the stages of the model (Challenge, Research & Create, Communicate, and Reflect & Grow). Discussion Questions: What does it mean to launch students into challenging rigorous work? Do we believe that all students are capable of reaching high expectations for learning? How can setting and reflecting on goals and learners lead to more metacognitive thinking? How and when do we give students opportunities to communicate their learning and present new ideas? How might this learning model increase student engagement and authentic learning?

6 If FWISD wants to grow learners who...
Collaborate (cooperate, partner, engage) Communicate (read, write, speak, listen) Think Critically (analyze, synthesize, problem solve) Innovate (create, develop, design, renew) Adapt (technologically, verbally, environmentally) Persevere (inquire, learn, seek knowledge) Respect (self, others, honor diversity) Problem Solve (plan, self-motivate, monitor, set goals) Serve Others (empathize, care for others, connect) The FWISD team developed these learner outcomes. Our goals extend beyond the Pre-K guidelines, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and the College and Career Readiness Standards.

7 ? What do teachers do to grow learners who... Collaborate Communicate
Thinks Critically Innovate Adapt Persevere Respect Problem Solve Serve Others ? In order to meet these learner outcomes, what must we do? How do we develop learners who can meet their learning targets?

8 DESIGN FOR IT! We must design for this level of authentic learning and student engagement. Teachers who implement this model move from deliverers of information to designers and facilitators. Students become leaders of their learning.

9 Our Learning Model uses Best Practices.
Our Learning Model is designed with these research-based BPs in mind. These will be the basis of our professional learning, practice, and instructional coaching.

Summer 2017 Fall Spring 2018 insert graphic of district learning framework here At the end of summer and the start of the fall we are learning about the FWISD Learning Model. It was designed with these research-based BPs in mind. These will be the basis of our professional learning. Learn about the FWISD Learning Model in this training. Grow in the e2L Best Practices through Professional Learning & Coaching.

11 A↔B Communication THREE ROUNDS AB Communication
Have participants pair up and choose who is A and who is B. For each question, you’ll allow them to take turns answering, one minute each. Let them know if A or B should go first. When one person is talking, the listener has to listen and not speak until time is up. Then, switch speakers/listeners and give the other person one minute to speak. After both have answered the question, switch to the next round and let the other person start speaking.

12 Why do we want to implement a learning model?
ROUND ONE Have participants pair up and choose who is A and who is B.

13 What are you curious about?
ROUND TWO Have participants pair up and choose who is A and who is B.

14 How Learn Best? do you ROUND THREE
Have participants pair up and choose who is A and who is B.

15 John F. Kennedy felt pressure for the United States to catch up to Soviet Union in space race. On May 25, 1961 Kennedy made a speech stating by the end of the decade, he would put a man on the moon. NASA only had 10% of what they needed to know to land a man on the moon.

16 July 20, 1969 On July 20, 1969, just before the end of the decade, they did it. They met their goal. Even though the target was set before all the nuts and bolts were in place,

17 nuts and bolts of an idea to the moon.
Moonshot Thinkers are willing to start with nuts and bolts of an idea and plan for it to take them to the moon. Our district has a vision for what learners need. We may not know all of the pieces needed to make it happen today, but we will. We have set a goal and have faith that it will be met, because we know we can all learn together along the way to create the structures necessary to make it happen. We are all in this together, and we are here to support you. This room is full of Moonshot Thinkers who will continue to take the brave first step. We believe in the long-term goal and have a commitment to go for it, knowing that we will be supported along the way. The vision will become a reality, because of teachers like you. Welcome to Moonshot Thinking. Our literacy goal,100x25, means 100% of our young students will read on grade level by This is Moonshot Thinking and it totally doable. Our goals for middle year mathematics and college and career readiness are also doable because we are aligning all our resources toward those shared learning outcomes.

18 Join us this year as we launch the Fort Worth ISD Learning Model.
