4. About Altera’s Quartus II software
The Quartus II software is the newer generation of Altera’s CPLD software
Many of its features are offered free of charge to students
Commercial applications require licencing
Altera wants to retain copyright control over its software. Students must download their own copies and obtain their own licences.

5. Important
Please follow the steps indicated in the following pages very carefully.
If you skip a step, or make an error, the software will not run as required, and/or you may not be capable of programming the device.

6. Setting up the Quartus II Software
You will need to set up an account using your SAIT and answer any marketing questions in an appropriate manner. You may use the following information:

7. Setting up the Quartus II Software
On average, the software set-up process takes about an hour depending on the download rates. It’s a big file (over 1.4GB).
Go to the site:
USE FIREFOX…the site has trouble with IE
Follow the download link (top right of the screen on last viewing)
Scroll down to the Software Selector
Select by device
Select MAX Series
Select MAX 7000
Select WEB EDITION (latest version)

9. Setting up the Quartus II Software
Run and install the downloaded file. See the computer help desk for help.
Start the software.
Some people have had trouble with programming the boards. A JTAG service must be running. Hopefully the new version of the software have solved this problem. If you cannot program your board we can address it in class.

10. Setting up the programmer
After the software is installed an interface is required to communicate with the physical chip via your USB port.
Instruction will be given in class.
