Advanced Placement Computer Science participation rates indicate severe inequities in ethnic and gender participation

In addition to the demand from the public and employers, we are seeing some severe inequities in participation from ethnic minorities and females.
I’d like to introduce Andre Hargunani, principal from the Critical Design and Gaming School at Hawkins High School in South Los Angeles.
He will share about his experience leading a new school that provides students with an opportunity to learn computer science.

I’d like to focus on how our district is approaching computer science implementation
To begin, our district is not alone in making a commitment to preparing students in computer science
Other large urban districts have already made commitments to integrate computer science into instruction for all students in their districts

9. Computer Science Course Offerings in LAUSD

LAUSD already has made significant investments in offering computer science courses to high school students
On June 5, 2014, the Board of Education was provided an informative regarding computer science, particularly our partnership with Code.org, a nonprofit group that supports districts in implementing computer science curriculum.
Since then, we have begin implementing these courses…
But the implementation of computer science courses have been dependent on teacher and schools volunteering to offer these courses
Our partnership with Code.org has provided free professional development for teachers to implement the ECS and CS Principles courses, and our Mobilize grant with UCLA has helped LAUSD develop the IDS course that is a high school third year math course focused on statistics and data analysis

Because implementation of the computer science courses has been voluntary, we see that the number of high schools that have offered computer science courses is not evenly distributed across the district
Only 70 of our 98 senior high schools offer computer science courses
This leads to serious concerns about equity and access for all students
There are high school students in this district who do not have the opportunity to even take a computer science course
I’d like to now introduce Leslie Hicks, a computer science teacher at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School, who will share about her experiences and the experiences of students in learning computer science

As a team, we have drafted a strategic plan that address the equity and access issues within LAUSD and provides a roadmap for how we can ensure that all students TK-12 have access to this vital curriculum.
We will be seeking your support and the support from outside partners in funding personnel, curriculum development and teacher training around computer science.
