The Gonorrhea germs are found in the mucous areas of the body:
Genital tract Penis Rectum Throat Vagina

Signs and Symptoms: Pain or burning sensation when passing urine
Vaginal discharge that is yellow or bloody Bleeding between menstrual periods Heavy bleeding with periods Pain during sex. A white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis. Gonorrhea can also cause eye infections in new born babies.

Causative agent: Gonorrhea is caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The infection is transmitted from one person to another through vaginal, oral, or anal sex. Common among younger people, ages 15-30, who have multiple sex partners. A mother may transmit gonorrhea to her newborn during childbirth. Gonorrhea bacteria

Staining samples directly for the bacterium
Diagnosis: Health care providers usually use three laboratory techniques to diagnose gonorrhea: Staining samples directly for the bacterium Detecting bacterial genes or DNA in urine Growing the bacteria in laboratory cultures Traditionally, gonorrhea was diagnosed with gram stain and culture.

Treatment: Gonorrhea is treated with penicillin or other antibiotics in pill form or by injection. Antibiotics that are currently used are: Cefixime Ceftriaxone Ciprofloxacin Ofloxacin Tetracycline * The antibiotics Ciprofloxacin and Ofloxacin should not be taken if you have Gonorrhea and are: pregnant younger than 18 years old

Effect: Untreated gonorrhea can cause serious and permanent health problems in both women and men. In women, gonorrhea is a common cause of pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID) Gonorrhea can spread to the blood or joints. This condition can be life threatening. People with gonorrhea can more easily contract HIV, the virus that causes AIDS Joint pain

Prevention: Avoid any sexual contact
Steps of preventing gonorrhea include: Avoid any sexual contact Do not wait for symptoms to appear, particularly if you or your partner have other sexual contacts Proper hand washing is essential as the bacteria can be transferred to the eyes Regular check-ups for STD's should be part of your regular medical examination Sexual relations should be handled responsibly by limiting the number of sexual partners and using condoms Visit a local sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic, hospital, doctor or health practitioner
