(A) Conjunctivitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common infectious cause of ophthalmia neonatorum. This 10-day-old neonate presented with lid swelling with erythema and mild mucopurulent eye discharge. (B) Intense hyperemia of the palpebral conjunctiva is seen. Direct fluorescent antibody staining for elementary bodies was positive, and both Gram stain and culture were negative for Neisseria gonorrhoeae. (Photo contributor: Binita R. Shah, MD.)
