The moment queen Elizabeth died, the Scottish king James rushed down to London to snatch the crown. Elizabeth had no children, and her brother and sisters were all dead, so there was no Tudor heir to the throne. James was a distant cousin from the Stuart family and he wanted the crown firmly on his head before anyone else did.

James was a nervous, suspicious, dishonest man
James was a nervous, suspicious, dishonest man. He had some odd ideas- he was frightened of pigs, hated the sea and was afraid that witches were always casting spells on him. But given his childhood it’s not so difficult to see why he was so peculiar. In the first year of his life, his father was strangled and then blown up. Over the next few years he had various guardians who were shot, poisoned or kidnapped and when he was twenty his mother’s head was cut off by his aunt queen Elizabeth the First.

Fireworks Like said before James was always suspicious that people were plotting against him, and he was right! On the fifth of November, two years after he was crowned, some Catholic terrorists tried to blow up Parliament. But the night before the planned explosion, one of them, Guy Fawkes, was discovered in a cellar under the Houses of Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder. Guy was tortured and nearly all the terrorists were captured and executed. The Gunpowder Plot was then used as an excuse to persecute the powerful old Catholic families. Guy could never have guessed that his capture and grizzly death would still be celebrated 400 years later. Every November children make a dummy, or Guy, out of old clothes and burn him on a big bonfire accompanied by displays of fireworks and that the BBC would turn his story into a record breaking movie.
