WHAT WE DO DOK has a model school for learners with specific difficulties. RARE GEM TALENT SCHOOL, KAJIADO COUNTY. RTS WORK WITH KNEC TO REGISTER LEARNERS FOR KCPE. We offer workshop to create awareness and train teachers on the best practices to support learners with SLDS in SCHOOL LEVELS AND IN ZONES.

3 Introduction to Special Education
SPECIAL EDUCATION AROUND THE WORLD IS CONTINUOUSLY CHANGING. EDUCATORS, HEALTH PROFESSIONALS SCIENTISTS CONTINUE TO LEARN ABOUT NEW CONDITIONS WHAT CAUSES OR WHAT TRIGGERS CONDITIONS HAVING A LABELED LEARNING DIFFICULTY IS NOT A NEGATIVE AND DOES NOT MAKE A CHILD LESS DESERVING THAN THEIR PEERS THAT WE DEEM “NORMAL”. INSTEAD : CHILD’S DIFFERENCES IS WHAT MAKES THEM UNIQUE, THIS SHOULD PROVIDES US WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE ABLE TO LEARN NEW THINGS AND ASSIST THEM TO LEARN IN DIFFERENT OR ALTERNATIVE WAYS.

4 WHAT IS SPECIAL EDUCATION?
The term Special Education refers to a broad spectrum of different learning diagnosis’ and conditions, In one diagnosis, there are often different symptoms or behaviours that are observed as well as levels within each diagnosis. This makes things more difficult as the teacher and school can have multiple students with the same diagnosis, however their needs are different. As a result of this it is important that all students have a developed, monitored and updated IEP (Individual Education Plan) to help meet their unique needs.

5 MAIN CONDITIONS FOUND IN MAINSTREAM CLASSES ARE:
DYSLEXIA: difficulty in words and language DYSCALCULIA: difficulty in mathematics DYSGRAPHIA: difficulty in writing. AUTISM DOWNSDROME ATTENTION DEFFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD)

6 DYSLEXIA Dyslexia is from Greek origins meaning “difficulty with words," It is a specific language learning disability. It is generally believed to be an inherited neurological condition It affects the person’s reading and writing skills. It has nothing to do with a person’s intelligence, as most people with dyslexia are of normal or above average IQ

7 TYPES OF DYSLEXIA Within Dyslexia there are three main classifications; Dysnemkinesia, Dysphonia, Dyskinesia. These classifications are based on where the person with the exceptionality has significant struggles.

8 Dysnemkinesia will often reverse letters by writing a b as a d, M as W, 7 as l,u as small n etc, they also reverse words, was as saw. Dysphonesia will struggle with the auditory side and therefore not be aware of the phonological side confusing house and home. when reading or writing words differently such as animal, it would be written aminal. Dyskinesia is the inability to consistently match sounds and blends, resulting in words being spelt alphabetically instead of following general spelling rules, such as enough spelt enuf, knife- naif, school- sckul e.t.c

9 Conti….. they Struggle in:
Dyslexia have struggles with all three parts, but the severity for each classification will differ for each individual. they Struggle in: reading-learning how to combine sounds and phonics to form words. Writing-organizing ideas, poor spelling, errors in letter formation. Speaking- misinterpretation of what is heard, delayed speech. mathematics -Transposing digits within numbers, Memorizing of math facts

10 AUTISM Autism is an extremely complex disorder
Autism is a neurological disorder which affects a person’s developmental disability. The neurological aspect of the exceptionality include: difficulties with communication, social interaction, and/or unusual patterns of behaviour. not fully understood what causes it, it is widely believed that 1:165 children born are autistic

11 Down Syndrome Down Syndrome is a natural chromosomal rearrangement.
Down Syndrome has strong physical characteristics, often making it easy to identify, Students with Down Syndrome, are able to complete a normal schooling program generally, But do require a lot of support and early interventions to be able to succeed and achieve this

12 ATTENTION-DEFICIENT DISORDER (ADHD)
hyperactivity-impulsiveness and inattention Those that have hyperactivity-impulsiveness behaviours often do well in school, however they distract others can be labeled as a trouble student or a bad student due to these behaviours.

13 Support to learners with specific disabilities.
The inclusive classroom all students are given the opportunity to access the curriculum and to achieve well. Through creating time for each learner by developing individualized education programs (IEP) Identifying the learners strength and nurturing their talents. Working with other professionals e.g. OT, PT speech therapies etc Remediation or working one on one. site successful people with disability and let the learners identify with them as role models. E.g.Richard Branson, Will Smith, many Kenyan Marathoners.
