1 Skeletal System

2

3 Functions of the Skeletal System
Provides shape and support Enables you to move Protects your organs Produces blood cells Stores minerals and other materials until your body needs them

4 How many bones are there in the skeleton?
It depends on your age. A newborn has 275 An adult has 206 Some of the bones a baby has fuse together, like the bones of a babies skull

5 Types of Skeletons Appendicular Any appendage Legs and arms Axial
Head and chest and spine

8 Bone Structure Compact Bone Hard and dense but not solid Spongy bone
Full of small spaces but strong Marrow Red found in most of our bones as a kid makes blood cells Yellow found in most of the bones in adults Stores fat and energy reserves

9 Strength Made of minerals just like rocks As hard as a rock Growth Alive because they contain cells, tissues and nerves Forms new bone tissue as you grow Development Skeleton is mostly made of cartilage It is replaced with bone by the time you stop growing

10 Joints A place in the body where 2 bones come together
They allow bones to move in different ways 2 kinds Immovable joints allow for little or no movement Movable joints allow the body to make a wide range of movements There are 230 movable joints in the body

11

12 Parts of a Joint Ligament
These are strong connective tissues that hold bones together Cartilage This covers the ends of the bones and keeps them from rubbing against each other Fluid This lubricates the ends of the bones allowing them to move smoothly over each other

13 Bone diagnoses Fractures Dislocation Sprain Arthritis Osteoporosis

14 Fractures A break in a bone

15 Dislocation When the end of a bone comes out of its joint

16 Sprain When ligaments are stretched to far and tear in places

17 Arthritis Disease of the joints that makes movement painful or impossible Inflammation of the joint

18 Osteoporosis A condition in which the bodies bones become weak and break easily

19 Fun facts about the Skeletal System to end on
Our bone is six times stronger than steel if both are of the same weight. The size of the smallest bone is equivalent to the size of a rice grain. Of the 206 bones in the skeletal system, 52 of them make both our feet, 52 in your hands and 14 your face. After death, cartilage rots faster than bone. This is why the skulls of skeletons have no nose or ears. The only bone in your body without a joint is in your throat. Men’s bones are thicker than women's.
