Why does the dissection of a fetal pig help us learn about human anatomy?

2. WAC
Hog farmers often kill the weakest piglets in the liter so there is more food for the stronger ones. Comment on this practice.

3. Standards
II.A.5.a - Illustrate the development of both an animal and a plant multicellular organism (cells, specialized cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and organisms).
II.A.5.b - Describe how organs and systems in both plants and animals function.
II.A.5.c - Recognize that a degenerative disease involves the deterioration of the organs or tissues.

4. Objectives
Apply anatomical body orientations (ventral, dorsal, anterior, posterior, etc.)
Determine the sex of the fetal pig by observing external structures.
Observe muscular system and internal organs.
Practice safe handling and dissection techniques.

5. Safety
Wear gloves to protect your skin from absorbing the preservative.
Practice safe handling of scalpels, pins, and other sharp objects.
Keep the fetal pig in the pan when cutting. Never cut while holding the pig.
Return pig to it’s bag and loosely tie the bag at the end of each day’s dissection.
