1 Plate Tectonics Draw and Follow

2 Lithospheric Plates: Earth’s Layers

3 Lithospheric Plates

4 What is a geothermal gradient?

5 Two Types of Crust http://geology.com/nsta/crust.gif
More dense Less dense

6 Types of Crust

7 Lithospheric plates Both types of crust can exist on one plate or on separate plates. (As you can see on the map to the right, the type of crust(s) varies on the different plates.)

8 Passive vs Active Continental Margins
Continental and oceanic crusts do NOT meet on a plate boundary Active Continental and oceanic crusts DO meet on a plate boundary

9 Start a POM Chart Here Phenomenon Objects Motion/Model
(What I observed in the animation including drawn example) (Diagram how the plates were moving in relationship to one another) (Where on Earth this action can be found and examples of land features that can be created?) Objects (Which objects were interacting together?) (oceanic plate/ continental plate) Motion/Model (What actions/ explanations can describe the movements I saw?) *Make sure a majority of your page is open for the Phenomenon column as this will take up the most space. *As we continue in our notes you will be able to add more examples and supplementary information so be sure to leave some space. For this reason do a new page for each new boundary. *You do not need to fill in the Motion/Model column yet.

10 Divergent Boundary - oceanic
Example: Mid Oceanic Ridge

11 Divergent Boundary - oceanic

12 Divergent Boundary- continental
Example: Great Rift Valley in Eastern Africa

13 Divergent Boundary- continental

14 Convergent Boundary – oceanic/continental
Example: Chile, South America

15 Convergent Boundary – oceanic/continental

16 Convergent Boundary- oceanic/oceanic
Example: Aleutian Islands Older and more dense oceanic plate

17 Convergent Boundary- oceanic/oceanic

18 Convergent Boundary – Continent/ Continent
Example: Himalaya Mountain Range, India

19 Convergent Boundary – Continent/ Continent

20 Transform Fault http://geology.com/nsta/transform-boundary.gif
Example: San Andreas Fault Zone of western North America

21 Transform Boundary- Continental
