If one nation falls to communism, then all of the surrounding nations will fall… gotta keep that one from falling!
Refers to Europe after World War 2 and refers to Asia after China becomes communist

4. Brinkmanship
On the verge of war with USSR but not quite there… on the “brink” of war
Almost like “teasing” each other

5. Iron Curtain
Figurative name given to the divide in Europe between the communist nations and non-communist nations

6. Containment Truman’s policy of stopping the spread of communism
Tied to the Truman Doctrine

7. Arms Race
Struggle to gain weapons superiority…especially in the nuclear age
Think of the Hi and Lois snowballs!

8. Atomic Energy Act
Created a committee to oversee all nuclear weapons and peacetime use of nuclear power

9. Fall out shelters
Built to protect users from nuclear fall out should the US be attacked
Nuclear bombing drills in schools

10. Truman Doctrine Think Containment!!!
The US vows to give money to any country trying to stop communism
The goal was to keep communism from spreading after WW2

11. Marshall plan Money to help rebuild Europe after WW2
Remember, a bad economy breeds dictators…dictators lead to war…NO MORE WAR!!!
Hopes that the money will stimulate the economy and encourage democracy

12. Berlin blockade/Airlift and berlin wall
USSR builds a wall through Berlin and separates its section from the remainder (Berlin Wall)
Shuts down most rail and road traffic into the Western (Good people) side of Berlin…they can’t get supplies (Blockade)
So, we drop supplied into West Berlin and help them out
USSR soon lifts the blockade because it didn’t work, but the wall remains…

Members are nations who have vowed to combat communism

14. Warsaw pact
Communist nations who promised to back each other up (ORANGE)

15. U2 Spy plane incident
Oops… even though the US and USSR were KIND’a getting along better…we sent a spy plane to take pictures of Russia
They shot it down
We claimed it was a weather research plane “my bad”
Increased tensions again

16. HUAC House Un-American Activities Committee
Created to investigate disloyal activities (aka, commis)
Ties to McCarthyism…like a “witch-hunt”

17. BLACKLISTED Hollywood 10
Hollywood “big wigs” who were requested to testify before the HUAC but refused
Were placed in jail for not testifying
BLACKLISTED

18. The Rosenbergs Ethel and Julius, a married couple
Both were tried and convicted of passing atomic secrets to the Soviets
They were both executed

19. Alger Hiss He worked for the US State Department
Accused of passing secrets to the USSR
Convicted of PERJURY and sentenced to 5 years

20. McCarthyism A “witch-hunt” for communists Led by Senator McCarthy
Orchestrated through the HUAC
Many had patriotism questioned
Blacklisted many associated with being “unpatriotic”

21. Sputnik Russian satellite that was first in orbit
This event jump-started the “Space Race”

22. NASA
Started by Eisenhower in the 1950’s order to “beat” Russia in the Space Race
Eventually, the main goal … 1st to the moon!!!

23. Internal Security act Communists had to register with the government
Limited immigration from communist nations
Many Americans opposed it because they saw it as limited individual freedoms
