1 biomass heating of greenhouses
Applying the CHAB (Combined Heat And Biochar production) concept to biomass heating of greenhouses Partners are needed Osijek,

2 Biochar can result Why BIOMASS? It is cheap It is a renewable resource
There is plenty of it It is cheap It is a renewable resource It produces clean energy Biochar can result It provides energy independence WHEN and AS MUCH AS it is NECESSARY!

3 As an alternative to current methods of producing thermal energy by biomass combustion processes the use of the CHAB (Combined Heat And Biochar production) concept becomes more extensive; it synergistically combines production of heat energy and biochar (BCH) with very low emissions of PM and CO, and also with a negative end balance of atmospheric CO2. There is achieved an increase in direct income, and also a reduction in costs for the heat produced. BCH is a sterile charcoal obtained from pyrolysis of biomass by a gasification process in substoichiometric environment. There is obtained a proportion of 10 – 25 % of BCH depending on biomass and thermal regime. BCH has 75-90% carbon and it is characterized by very high porosity and absorption capacity. It can be used as an agricultural reclaiming product to increase fertility of agricultural soils, and also as activated carbon filter for air, gases and water. BCH incorporated into the soil is the most efficient and ecological way to sequester atmospheric carbon on long terms.

4 Filtering material (activated charcoal):
Why BIOCHAR? Agricultural reclaiming product: It ecologically and economically sequesters atmospheric C It holds nutrients by increasing electrical conductivity It is a substrate for the growth of microorganisms It raises soil pH – reduces acidity It holds water Easy to incorporate Filtering material (activated charcoal): For drinking water For pollutant emissions: ammonia, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide It holds nitrogen in compost

5 BIOMASS BIOCHAR

6 Why TLUD gasification?

7 Generates heat energy and biochar – the CHAB concept
TLUD Gasification Generates heat energy and biochar – the CHAB concept It generates fuel gas which burns cleanly It produces high quality Biochar at °C It is cheap, simple and reliable in operation It is tolerant to the type of biomass used It operates with negativ carbon balance It promotes local economic development

8 Conclusions 1. Applying the CHAB concept to convert existing cold solariums into tunnel greenhouses by heating with agricultural waste biomass results in: - 3-month increase in the service life of the controlled environment enclosure; - significant reduction in thermal energy costs; - increased productive capacity of the soil; - long-term sequestration of CO2 in the soil; - very low emissions of PM2.5 and CO. 2. By superior complete harnessing, based on the CHAB concept, of agricultural waste biomass, forest or spontaneous biomass there are created jobs, use value is generated leading to improved living standards in rural areas and real sustainable development. 3. By incorporating the biochar to agricultural soils there is achieved organic sequestering of atmospheric carbon, on average about 400 kg.CO2/t.bm or 600 kg.CO2/ha.year, which is the most efficient technology compared to other proposed and tested methods. It will become even more profitable when there will be granted green certificates for the sequestered C. 4. We recommend using heating installations based on TLUD gasification since they are of simple construction, cheaper, reliable in operation and produce clean heat energy at high overall efficiency, and they also produce high quality biochar. {ENERGSER Project - Partnerships }
