Strict program of spiritual and moral discipline Goal: Defend and spread Catholic faith Jesuits became advisors to Catholic rulers to help combat heresy Missionaries spread the Catholic faith to far away lands

Lived in Isolation, eating & sleeping very little; dedicated themselves fully to the faith Canonized by the Church

Majority of Europe remain Catholic Achieved some conversion – from Protestant back to Catholic Charity flourished & church abuses reduced Protestantism gained strong foothold on continent Religious conflict still plays part in Europe
