Welcome to Our Phi Tau Sigma Leadership Council Meeting & Annual Business Meeting Welcome to our Phi Tau Sigma Advisory Council Meeting and the Annual Business Meeting. Thank you for making the commitment to be here. Our goals for this luncheon are to give you an overview of Phi Tau Sigma’s activities and accomplishments over the past year, and provide an opportunities for networking to share best practices in local Chapters. Schmidl, President Phi Tau Sigma University of Minnesota My name is Mary Schmidl, and I’ve served for the past year as President of Phi Tau Sigma, the Honor Society for Food Science and Technology. It has been a pleasure to serve as President and fortunate to work with the remarkable and dedicated leadership of Phi Tau Sigma

You’ll see that after a short report on the state of our Honorary Society, we’ll spend the majority of this meeting on networking, to share challenges and best practices within local Chapters.

Later Today: Phi Tau Sigma & IFT Division Competition Awards Ceremony 3:00 – 4:15 p.m. Note: Raffle at end for cash prizes We especially hope you plan to attend the annual Awards Ceremony this afternoon, where we will announce Phi Tau Sigma award winners and the winners of IFT division competitions. Note that there will be a raffle at the end of this awards program, with three $100 cash prizes, but you must be present to win. At the IFT Awards Celebration which starts at 5:30 p.m. today, IFT has blocked 30 seats in the VIP section for Phi Tau Sigma members. We especially encourage new Phi Tau Sigma initiates to use these seats, but other Phi Tau Sigma members are also welcome to use these seats. All new Phi Tau Sigma initiates will be asked during the Awards Celebration to stand and be recognized.

Phi Tau Sigma Sponsored Events During the IFT Annual Meeting Saturday, June 21 1:15 – 2:30 pm Executive Committee Meeting Sunday, June 22 3pm-4:00pm ΦΤΣ Committee Meetings Monday, June 22 8:30am-10:00pm Symposium: “Innovations in Science and Technology for Food Quality, Safety, and Health Over the Past 25 Years” 1:30pm–2:15pm Symposium: “Developing a Database of Science-Based Materials for Food Science Outreach: Inspiring the Future Professional Cadre of Food Scientists 2:30pm–3:30pm Symposium: “Recruitment Skills: Instigating Career Decisions Among Students” Also included in your program is this schedule of Phi Tau Sigma-sponsored events that will take place over the next few days. Some of these are especially targeted to students. We hope you’ll be able to attend one of more of these special events.

At this IFT Annual Meeting, Phi Tau Sigma is celebrating it’s 61th year We’re glad you’re here to help us celebrate this milestone.

On display in the Award Ceremony Room today are two posters that celebrate the history of Phi Tau Sigma. This poster is a timeline of the history, since Phi Tau Sigma was established as the Honor Society for Food Science and Technology at the University of Massachusetts, by Dr. Guy Livingston and Dr. Carl Fellers in 1953.

A second poster identifies each of the Phi Tau Sigma chapters, from the University of Massachusetts in 1953, through the most recent at Institute for Food Safety and Health in 2013.

State of the Society Report President Mary K. Schmidl
Now for the State of the Society Report Before summarizing the accomplishments of individual committees, let me highlight several activities that cut across the organization. We’ve gained valuable support of Food Science Administrators and numerous leaders. To help future Phi Tau Sigma leaders and committees, we have guideline documents and arranged for annual reports. Finally, we’ve very pleased to have this second formal Leadership Council Meeting, that we’ve designed to help share best practices between Chapters.
