Lord God, we are such a blessed people. You, the Holy One, come to us each and every day, no matter where we are; even on the
15
road as we walk and wonder
road as we walk and wonder. You tell us every day that we are your children and that you love us. You don’t ask much of us, only that we love others as you have loved us.
16
But we fall short of that call daily
But we fall short of that call daily. So often we take that love and withhold it from others. We hoard your blessings and keep them for ourselves.
17
Forgive our selfishness and forgive us for the pain we cause others

PROCLAIMING THE WORD SCRIPTURE READING: Luke 24:13-35
23
Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing,
24
Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, ‘What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?’ They stood still, looking sad.
25
Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, ‘Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?’ He asked them, ‘What things?’
26
They replied, ‘The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and
27
crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel
crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us.
28
They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive.
29
Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him. Then he said to them, ‘Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared!
30
Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?’ Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.
31
As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.’
32
So he went in to stay with them
So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight.
33
They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?’ That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem;
34
and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together
and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been
35
made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
L: This is the Word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God!

51
*THE GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
L: May the God of the Emmaus road be with you. P: And also with you. L: Fellow pilgrims, give your hearts to God. P: We offer our hearts to the One who makes them burn within us.
52
L: With joy we praise you, gracious God, for you have created heaven and earth, made us in your image, and kept walking with us—even when we failed to recognize you. When we walked a different road and sinned against you and our love failed, your love remained steadfast, pure and holy.
53
Your love and persistence has opened our eyes by speaking to us through your prophets and saints like Moses and Miriam. So with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
54
P: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
55
L: In sending Jesus the Christ, the one who walked with the travelers, you revealed to all how your love works and taught us all we need to know. Jesus obeyed you by preaching, teaching, restoring and redeeming. He put total trust in you, trust even unto the cross.
56
With the sacrifice we celebrate here, he rescued us from sin and death
With the sacrifice we celebrate here, he rescued us from sin and death. And he walked out of that tomb into new life, which he shares with all. For that we are deeply thankful. So, here in this holy time of celebration, here at the sacred feast prepared for us, we would speak of that mystery we call faith:
57
P: We remember Christ’s sacrifice and death; We remember Christ’s resurrection; We remember Christ will walk again in glory. L: God of Mercy, let your Holy Spirit move in power and love over us and over these gifts of bread and wine.
58
By our sharing of them may we experience the death and resurrection of Christ, and may we be strengthened to walk with him and others and be holy even as he is holy.
59
The Lord’s Prayer (unison)
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come; thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.
60
Give us this day our daily bread
Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
61
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
62
WORDS OF INSTITUTION On the night he was arrested,
while they were eating together and having fellowship, Jesus reached over, took some bread, Blessed it, broke it And gave it to his disciples and told them, “ Take this and eat it. This is my body, given for you.
63
Do this remembering me and my example.”
In the same way, as the meal ended, he took the cup from the table, and said, “This cup I have here is the new covenant, new hope, which will be sealed in my blood, blood I will shed for you for the forgiveness of your sins. Whenever you drink it,
64
Remember me.” Jesus tells us boldly: “I am the bread of life. If any of you come to me, you won’t be hungry; if any of you believe in me, you Will never be thirsty.” Friends, every time you eat this bread and drink this cup,
65
You proclaim the saving death of the risen Lord until he comes – and you experience the grace of God.
66
