Periodic Table Recap Mr. Wright
2
Activity First off, if everyone can make a list of everything they can see, and write down what they think it is made up of!
3
Atoms and their structure
Theory – all matter is made up of tiny building blocks Atoms can stick together in different combinations to build countless types of different substances There are 118 known types of atoms and only 91 found naturally. The remaining 27 have been made in the laboratory. Scientists list these atoms from smallest to largest on the Periodic Table
4
Atoms Atoms stick together as either clusters of atoms known as molecules or large grid-like structure known as lattices. If a substance is made up of only one type of atom, it is called an element. If a substance is made up of two or more types of atoms chemically joined together, it is called a compound.
5
Inside atoms Each atom is made up of three types of sub-atomic particles called protons, electrons and neutrons. Protons and neutrons form a cluster at the centre of the atom, called the nucleus. They have roughly the same mass which is roughly 1800 times heavier than electrons Electrons are much smaller and move very fast around the nucleus in shells
