BNL LARP QXF Cold Mass Vertical Cold Test Facility Proposal Overview – Cost & Schedule Mike Anerella December 17, 2013
2
Goals Description of current test capabilities Description of the upgrades needed to meet test requirements Upgrade and Operating Cost Upgrade and Operating Schedule
3
Available Equipment (more later)
CTI Model 4000 refrigerator (~ 320 L/hr) Ø710 mm, 6.1M Vertical Test Dewar ILC Service Cryostat (under construction) Other: 30T/5T Crane Hook max. height = 7.6 m/ 8.3? m Dewar height above floor = 0.9M (max. coil length ~ 6M)
4
Installation Location – high bay of Building 902
Nash Pump He refrigerator Dewar 3 Service cryostat
5
Scope Complete service cryostat assembly & commission unit
Design / build 1.9K, 22KA vertical dewar within existing dewar Design / upgrade power supplies, energy extraction, quench protection systems, data acquisition Analyze, satisfy test requirements Andy / Paul Piyush Joe
6
Service Cryostat schedule
Assembly is nearly complete Transfer line length depends on final cryostat location Performance established by end of April
7
Service Cryostat Commissioning Cost
$145K total, FY14
8
design / construction schedule
Engineering & design must be completed sometime in FY14 to meet 8/15 test schedule → need ~ $370K in FY14 Controls / DAQ = Smallest float; → need $173K for M&S in FY14 Approx. 3 months of schedule float
9
design / construction cost
TOTAL COST 1.9K mechanical 4.5K mechanical electrical Notes: no contingency Details in backup slides
10
LQXF test operating schedule
Schedule (for now) assumes 12 hr. test / 16 hr. cryo days 48 days total 8 days before test Note: Functional Test Requirements specifies 2 month total testing time including installation, cool down, test, warm-up & removal (close!) Assumes great efficiency via connectors Details later (Joe) 6 days to disconnect
11
LQXF test operating cost
$376K total labor & material, FY14 – 1308 M-H
12
MQXF test operating schedule
Schedule (for now) assumes 12 hr. test / 16 hr. cryo days 30 days total 8 days before test Note: Functional Test Requirements specifies 1 month total testing time including installation, cool down, test, warm-up & removal → can be achieved by using a second top hat Assumes great efficiency via connectors Details later (Joe) 6 days to disconnect
13
MQXF test operating cost
$168K total labor & material, FY14 – 756 M-H
14
(NO contingency, no measuring coils)
Summary $1.4M total cost to design, build, install VTF, commission service cryostat (NO contingency, no measuring coils) Proposal heavily leverages existing infrastructure: 320L/hr helium refrigerator Ø710 mm diameter, 6.1 m long test dewar Nash-Kinema bar vacuum pump 1.9K external heat exchanger (ILC service cryostat) 30KA Power supply IGBT’s, HV, LV data loggers, DAQ, etc. Work can be completed in time for LQXF mirror assembly test, provided funding is available in FY14 for engineering and design ($370K), service cryostat commissioning ($145K) and electrical LLP’s ($173K); →total FY14 funding needed = $688K Proposal (almost) meets FTR schedule for LQXF Proposal meets FTR schedule for MQXF by adding a 2nd top hat Vertical – early - testing of cold mass provides greatest risk reduction for LARP

16
(FNAL) MQXF testing costs (from June 2013 review)
$3M total construction cost $180K per test in production, 2 cold masses at a time! Only $41K material per test!
17
Design/ Construction Electrical costs
18
Design / construction Mechanical costs
4.5K 1.9K add’l
19
LQXF testing time & resources
150% = 12 hr. work day • 200% = 16 hr. work day
