Unit 1: Picture Concepts and Conversation Mathematics Unit 1: Counting and Cardinality (0-5) RISE (Raising Instructional Success for Everyone) Begins in October M, W, F: 8:45 – 9:15 ELA: Storytown is our teacher resource for instruction. Real literature (Eric Carle-Head to Toe), specific lessons are directly linked to CCSS for each unit. First Unit is about communication: looking someone in the eye when speaking to them, an appropriate greeting, how to ask a question (all things typical Kindergarteners need to learn) – these are CCSS speaking and listening standards. In addition, students are learning/reviewing letters and letter sounds. Assessments are taking place to determine student knowledge of letters, letter sounds. MATH: Hands on Standards is our primary resource for instruction. Students are focused on using actual materials to count and represent numbers of objects in a set. The first unit focuses on student understanding of number from This is of primary importance for building a foundation in number sense. Subitizing is instant recognition of a combination of dots for example: (show dot card or dice). Talk about number collections…cardinality. Because this is the first year of CCSS implementation in MATH, units are being developed throughout the course of the school year with teacher input.
