In these lectures…. These lectures are intended to provide an overview of the structure and functions of the CNS and some examples of common neurological conditions affecting adults. Objective: To gain an understanding of how CNS damage and degeneration affects function in relation to the type, extent and location of CNS insult

Revise basic neuro-anatomy Relate anatomical structure to CNS function Examine different mechanisms of CNS cellular damage Examine examples of conditions affecting the CNS to illustrate the impact of different types and locations of CNS damage: Multiple Sclerosis to illustrate patchy and progressive damage characterised by demyelination and axonal loss in young adults Parkinson’s Disease to illustrate the impact of damage to a small but unique brain area and its connections in adults Dementia to illustrate a typical condition of the elderly leading to loss of cognition and memory
