5 Common perceptions Rural development hardly raises standards of living in Africa Rural development is upheld religiously by the west Rural development imposes the power of science on people Destroys environments

6 Approaches Problem oriented learning: First describe and define the problem, then learn all that is known about the problem, then suggest and test solutions, then adopt and adapt working solutions Do all the above in an interdisciplinary manner Do this in a community. i.e. in the field.

7 Principles Inter-disciplinary Learning for researchers and communities
Blends theoretical and practical learning Yields knowledge and practical solutions Beneficial to the community

8 Benefits Joint learning across institutions, regions and communities
Build capacity for applied research Strengthen ability to identify, test and solve problems; implement solution and monitor successes. Produce potential policy changing knowledge within a local setting Empower communities with knowledge and partnerships.

9 Steps Site selection Problem identification and formulation
Collecting of background information on relevant theme Problem identification and formulation Problem analysis Planning of field work Study design, type of data to collect and how? Collecting and analyzing data about the problem Overcoming logistical difficulties to acquire real information Writing of reports, presentations and evaluations Group Reports, Group ppts, Individual report and PPT
