1 The YELLOW Cross Lesson 5 Lesson 4 Review Lesson Extension
Rubik’s Trivia Vocabulary Lesson Focus Lesson Review

2 PP2 GOAL: The YELLOW Cross The goal of this stage is to get the YELLOW cross on the UP face.

3 HORIZONTAL PP3 Horizontal is the name that describes when a line (or row) is parallel to the horizon. When looking at the cube, a horizontal line is parallel to the BOTTOM or TOP layer of the cube. THE MIDDLE LAYER IS HORIZONTAL HORIZONTAL LINE

4 VERTICAL PP4 Vertical is the name that describes when a line (or row) is perpendicular to the horizon. When looking at the cube, a vertical line is parallel to the RIGHT or LEFT layer of the cube. THE BLUE MIDDLE ROW IS VERTICAL VERTICAL LINE

5 REVIEW from The Middle Layer
Find an edge on the TOP layer that is NOT YELLOW on the UP or FRONT face. Match the FRONT face of the edge to the center piece of the same color by twisting the TOP layer until there is a vertical middle line of all one color on the FRONT face of the cube. Look at the UP face of the edge: If the UP face color belongs on the RIGHT face (clockwise) of the cube: If UP face color belongs on the LEFT face (counter-clockwise) of the cube: Repeat the instructions until the horizontal middle line of each face has been solved. Make sure the WHITE cross and WHITE corners on the DOWN face remain intact each time you reposition a UP or FRONT face non-YELLOW edge. PP5 REVIEW from The Middle Layer To get the Middle Layer:

6 PP6 RIGHT ANGLE A 90 degree angle

7 How many YELLOW pieces are on the YELLOW face?
PP7 How many YELLOW pieces are on the YELLOW face? Does your YELLOW face have a YELLOW cross? If yes, then solving for the YELLOW cross is complete. Lesson Focus

8 Does your YELLOW face have only the YELLOW center piece?
PP8 Does your YELLOW face have only the YELLOW center piece? If yes, then follow the algorithm to get the YELLOW cross: Lesson Focus

9 Does your YELLOW face have a right angle shape at one of the corners?
PP9 Does your YELLOW face have a right angle shape at one of the corners? If yes, face the YELLOW right angle toward the BACK LEFT corner then follow the algorithm to get the YELLOW cross: Lesson Focus

10 PP10 Does your YELLOW face have a single middle line horizontally or vertically? If yes, match the line so it is horizontal on the UP face, then follow the algorithm to get the YELLOW cross: Lesson Focus

11 If you are unsure about the image on your cube, or if your cube does not match one of the three options exactly: Find the best match. For example: If your YELLOW face has a YELLOW center piece and a YELLOW edge, the most accurate match would be the single YELLOW center piece. If your YELLOW face has a single YELLOW middle line, horizontally or vertically, and a YELLOW corner piece, the most accurate match would be the single YELLOW middle line. PP11 Troubleshooting

12 Does your Rubik’s Cube look like this?
Examine your Rubik’s Cube. PP12 GOAL: The YELLOW Cross The goal of this stage is to get the YELLOW cross on the UP face. Does your Rubik’s Cube look like this?

13 You have achieved The YELLOW Cross
PP13 Congratulations! Congratulations! Congratulations! Congratulations! Congratulations! Congratulations! You have achieved The YELLOW Cross

14 REVIEW Look at the YELLOW face. Match the YELLOW face with:
The single YELLOW center piece and follow the algorithm: The YELLOW right angle corner and follow the algorithm: The single YELLOW line down the middle of the YELLOW face and follow the algorithm: PP14 REVIEW To get the YELLOW Cross:

15 Lesson Extension The YELLOW cross is a symmetrical shape.
PP15 The YELLOW cross is a symmetrical shape. Symmetry is when an image can be divided equally and looks the same on both sides of the division. When you are looking at the YELLOW cross, imagine a line drawn down the middle of the cross. The images on both sides of the line are the same. Therefore, the YELLOW cross is symmetrical. Lesson Extension How does this lesson apply to math?

16 Question: About how many Rubik’s Cubes have been sold worldwide?
PP16 Question: About how many Rubik’s Cubes have been sold worldwide? Answer: More than 350 Million!
