Impact of switching to an EV on a household’s emissions
Typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.7 metric tons of C02 per year (EPA). Operating a Battery EV on your electric utility’s Basic Service in New England (which is getting cleaner every year) produces 32% of the emissions of gasoline-only car (UCS), thereby reducing emissions 68%. 68% of 4.7 metric tons is: 3.2 metric tons CO2. 4.7 metric tons of CO2/year: 32%: see previous slide Sources: EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, Union of Concerned Scientists EV Emissions Tool
6
Switching to an EV (reducing GHG by 3
Switching to an EV (reducing GHG by 3.2 metric tons of CO2 per year) is equivalent to: Driving 7,669 fewer miles. average passenger vehicle in US drives 11,346 miles per year. Or consuming 360 fewer gallons of gasoline. average passenger vehicle in US uses 533 gallons per year. Or burning 315 fewer gallons of home heating oil. average MA household uses 600 gallons of heating oil per year. Or cutting household electricity by 47%. Source for miles, gallons of gasoline, and electricity (see next slide): Source for home heating oil: 3.2 metric tons CO2 x lbs/metric ton x 1 gallon HO/22.4 lbs C02 Sources: EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, U.S. Energy Information Administration
