What are your perceptions of Chinese- speaking cultures?

3. Activation
Is there anyone whose family is from a Chinese-speaking country? If so, which one?
Does anyone in the class currently have family living in a Chinese-speaking country?
Has anyone visited a Chinese-speaking country?

4. Introduction to China China is the largest Chinese-speaking country.
As you watch this video, write down your first impressions of what you see.

5. Analyzing Photographs
You will examine three photographs and complete the Analyzing Photographs Activity Sheet. /

6. You will now have ten minutes to “silent share” with you partner.
Trade papers and examine what your partner has written down.
When you have done that, turn the paper over and write a response describing how their interpretation was different from yours.
What details did they overlook?
How do their interpretations reveal their perceptions of Chinese culture?

7. Chinese-Speaking Countries
The countries we will be looking at today are China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, and Singapore.
Use your phone or computer to locate the countries mentioned, their capital cities, and the countries that border them. (Some will not had borders on this map, get them as close as possible).

8. It is important to not that Hong Kong and Macau may or may not be considered a country as they do not have an official capital city.
They are considered “Special Administrative Regions.”

China stretches 3106 miles across the East Asian landmass. It includes broad plains, expansive deserts, and lofty mountain ranges.
Mountains, hills, and highlands cover 66% of the nations territory. This impedes communication and limiting land available for agriculture.
Includes the Himalayan Mountains and Mount Everest.

10. Journal
Choose one the Chinese-speaking countries we have looked at today and research a current event that has happened within that country.
Summarize the article (and tell me WHERE YOU FOUND IT).
