HOOK “The 10,000- Hour Rule” Journal #2
You have just been stranded on a remote island. Finally, you have time to do whatever you want! For as long as you want! You have no hope of rescue for the next 1,000 days…and you have at least 10 hours of day light each day. HOW will you spend your time? What would you do for 10,000 hours? What would you NOT do? Describe your days and how you invest your time. Be creative!

He went to University of Michigan which was one of the first universities in the world to switch over to time-sharing So 100 people could use the computer at once instead of just 1 He spent all his time there; it was open 24 hours He says he programmed “8-10 hours a day” He concluded he spent about 10,000 hours programming

The Beatles started playing together in 1957 They came to America in 1964 Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967 (about 10 years later …which is approximately 10,000 hours!) 1960- Went to play in Hamburg, Germany at all-night strip clubs They were forced to play for 8 hours at time, 7 days a week By 1964 they had played 1,200 times!

1. Gates went to Lakeside Private School (a high school that had a time share terminal in 1968) 2. the moms of Lakeside students had money to pay the fees 3. When the money ran out, one mom worked at C-Cubed & let kids go there 4. Gates found out about ISI & someone needed that info 5. Gates lived in walking distance to University of Washington 6. U of W had free computer time from 3am- 6am 7. TRW called Bud Pembroke 8. Formative Assessment: “Four Corners”
Based on what we have discussed today, choose the corner of the room that MOST reflects your viewpoint on the book. Corner 1= I AGREE100% with the author Gladwell; The 10,000 Hour-Rule is exactly right. Corner 2= I DISAGREE 100% with the author. He is wrong! Corner 3= It’s 50/50. The author has some good points but fails to fully explain his ideas. Corner 4= I’m totally lost; I don’t even understand this book!
