1 Early Contact 1000 to Early 1600s

2 Why did European explorers sail to Canada?
Norse Vikings first Europeans to land in Canada around year 1000 Looking for fresh resources and a place to live Around 1400 other European explores began to come by boat For a long time they traded with China and India- however overland journey their was long and dangerous

3 European rulers wanted to find a water route to the west
In doing so, they eventually found Canada and other North American countries

4 Other Reasons for Exploring
European countries competing for wealth and power (one way to do this was to own and control more land) Therefore, rulers sent people on expeditions to claim lands for their countries

5 Reasons For Exploring Review
1. resources and wealth- furs, fish, gold, silver, wood, etc. 2. land and power- explores claimed land for their country and developed settlements and colonies their 3. trade route to Asia- looking for a water route to Asia for trading spices, tea and silks but found North America 4. curiosity- were curious about what was across the Atlantic Ocean 5. religion- European Christians wanted to spread their faith to other people in the world

6 Sailing Ships and Navigation
During this time, not many maps of the world existed (they were incomplete or incorrect) They didn’t have the technology that existed today (e.g., GPS, Google maps, atlases, engines of different speeds, airplanes, etc.) Back then, explores looked at the sun and stars to help them figure out where they were Used knowledge of sea to help them navigate (e.g., seeing shorebirds meant they were approaching land) In 1400, Europeans designed faster moving ships and used tools from Asia such as a compass and the astrolabe (measure the position of sun and stars to help explores locate where they are at sea)

7 Explorers Then and Now Then Now Sailing ships to find land
Explore planets (using technology like telescopes, robotic vehicles, rocket ships) Knowledge of the sea (shorebirds) Travel depths of oceans using submarines, robots, etc. compass GPS astrolabe Maps and Atlases Sun and stars
