Design Question 8 - Element 38: What does the teacher do to display objectivity and control?

Before we begin… Before we begin talking about element thirty-eight, let’s be sure that there is an understanding about how the elements in Design Question 8 are related. This is important as you plan your lessons. Directions: watch the video on the next slide. Please take notes, documenting how the elements in Design Question 8 are related.

How do the elements in Design Question 8 relate to each other?
You should have noticed that: Elements 36, 37, and 38 are intertwined. The overall goal of Design Question 8 is for student to feel like they are a part of a community. These three elements work in tandem to ensure that the desired effect is achieved. Teachers can utilize the strategies related to each of these elements to develop and maintain effective relationships with students. Now let’s talk about element 38, specifically.

Desired Effect in the Students
The desired effect is, “students’ perceptions of acceptance and sense of community are enhanced as a result of the teacher displaying objectivity and control.” To receive an Innovating rating, the teacher must monitor and make accommodations so that every student in their classroom achieves this desired effect.

Video Questions Q: What is the appropriate demeanor for a teacher to maintain regardless of student behavior? A: A teacher should remain calm and in control without emotional involvement regardless of student behavior. Q: Who should be able to tell what the teacher is thinking? A: Nobody should be able to tell what a teacher is thinking. Q: Whose side should a teacher take when interacting with students? A: A teacher should remain objective and not take sides at all. The teacher should question and guide students toward a resolution without indicating who is wrong or right.

Task While watching the video, identify the strategies the teacher uses that demonstrate objectivity and control. After watching the video you will be asked to identify the teacher and student evidence to rate the teacher on this element.

Click on the website below to view the video, When a Lesson Goes Wrong from teachingchannel.org. This teacher is in an intense situation where her lesson is going completely wrong. As a result her students are not following directions, talking amongst themselves, and complaining about the assignment. She is really tested on her ability to maintain objectivity and control. Listen close to her reflection about the students’ behavior between the two classes.

How to Rate Teacher and Student Evidence
The teacher does not exhibit extremes in positive or negative emotions. The teacher maintains an even keel throughout the lesson even as she knows it is not going well and students are misbehaving and complaining. The teacher addresses inflammatory issues and events in a calm and controlled manner. The teacher calmly answered student questions and addressed concerns throughout the class. Teacher interacts with all students in the same calm and controlled fashion. No matter which student she was interacting with the demeanor was the same. Teacher does not demonstrate personal offense at student misbehavior. In her reflection she states that it would be easy to put the blame on the students and be upset that they were disrespectful, but she knew she had to take responsibility. This wasn’t typical behavior, but a reaction to the frustration they were feeling at being overwhelmed by a lesson they didn’t understand.

How we Rated the Teacher
We rated this teacher as innovating. There is great evidence that she behaves in an objective and controlled manner even in stressful situations. As she was responding to students, she continued to maintain her calm attitude. A situation that could have escalated, was diffused by her controlled reaction. Additionally, she was able to make adjustments in a very short time that allowed her to experience much greater success in her next class. Because she behaved in this manner as she addressed the entire class as well as each individual student she interacted with, there is evidence of the effect on the classroom climate for all students.
