1 Agenda: Tuesday, 10/25 HW: Complete book and Study Guide BR:
Plickers, please, then add to SJ Great American Eclipse (P6 only) CW: Eclipses Correct H.W. BrainPop Quiz and Activity Eclipse Slides/Notes Eclipses Book

2 Great American Eclipse
Date today’s Bellringer in your Science Journal. Get together with your 4:00 partner. Watch the two videos, then discuss with your partner: Why is the Great American Eclipse special? Where are the best places to see totality on August 21, 2017?

3 1.3 Eclipses: Guided Reading
An eclipse occurs solar lunar umbra A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between Earth and the sun, blocking sunlight from reaching Earth.

4 1.3 Eclipses: Guided Reading, p2
penumbra During a lunar eclipse, the Earth is directly between the moon and the sun.

5 1.3 Eclipses: Guided Reading, p3
tides gravity Tides occur mainly because of differences in how much the moon’s gravity pulls on different parts of Earth.

6 1.3 Eclipses: Guided Reading, p4
A spring tide is a tide with the greatest difference between consecutive low tides and high tides. A neap tide is a tide with the least difference between consecutive low tides and high tides.

7 Eclipses: BrainPop Active Art: Eclipse
Take a lap and pick up both papers at front table. Create a new SJ Entry called Eclipses. Tape in each paper, quiz first, then activity sheet. Watch the video, filling out the quiz as we go. Correct using Peer Poll (thumbs up/down, stay/change) Take your text, and get together with your 8:00 partner to complete the Activity sheet. Active Art: Eclipse

12 Eclipses: Slides/Notes
Please take out a white lined sheet of paper and date it in the upper left hand corner. Make a T chart with Solar Eclipses on the left and Lunar Eclipses on the right. As we discuss the following slides, record bulleted notes in each column, emphasizing those pieces of information that are new or harder for you to understand. Add notes to each column, especially about new/harder information.

15 Study Guide Check In: Key Concepts
What causes the phases of the moon? Half the moon is always lit by the sun; but, we see the moon at different angles which causes the phases of the moon. What are solar and lunar eclipses? When the moon passes into the Earth's shadow, it's called a lunar eclipse. When the Sun is blocked from view by the moon, it's called a solar eclipse. What causes the tides? Tides are caused mainly by differences in how much the moon's gravity pulls on different parts of the Earth. Spring tides are caused by the gravity of the sun and moon pulling in the same direction. Neap tides are caused by the gravity of the sun and moon pulling in opposing directions.

16 Study Guide: Lunar Eclipse Diagram

17 Study Guide: Solar Eclipse Diagram

18 Study Guide: Tipped Orbit
This diagram explains why we don't have two eclipses every month. The moon’s orbit around Earth is inclined (tipped) by 5 degrees relative to Earth’s orbit around the Sun, so the Earth, moon, and Sun do not line up exactly very often which makes eclipses more rare.

19 Eclipses Book Take a lap.
Along the way, collect a pair of scissors and a glue stick and your Eclipse Book packet on front table. End up at your 6:00 meeting. Begin your Eclipse Book assembly: Cut out the five book pages and a cover. Please note that each table will have one sheet of covers to share. Return leftover blank rectangles to the front table.

20 Eclipses Book When all your rectangles are cut out, collect ONE piece of black construction paper from the front table. Fold it in half the long way. Cut and Fold Cut on the fold to give each partner one piece of black construction paper that is 4.5” x 9” long. Fold your cut piece of black paper into fourths.

21 Eclipses Book Refold your black paper into an “M” shape.
Retrieve two gluesticks. Cut out and attach the cover on the front page of your “M” shape.

22 Eclipses Book Order: Total Solar, Partial Solar, Total Lunar, Partial Lunar. Use the back of the cover page for page 5 (Penumbral Lunar)
