What causes the phases of the moon?
Half the moon is always lit by the sun; but, we see the moon at different angles which causes the phases of the moon.
What are solar and lunar eclipses?
When the moon passes into the Earth's shadow, it's called a lunar eclipse. When the Sun is blocked from view by the moon, it's called a solar eclipse.
What causes the tides?
Tides are caused mainly by differences in how much the moon's gravity pulls on different parts of the Earth. Spring tides are caused by the gravity of the sun and moon pulling in the same direction. Neap tides are caused by the gravity of the sun and moon pulling in opposing directions.

This diagram explains why we don't have two eclipses every month.
The moon’s orbit around Earth is inclined (tipped) by 5 degrees relative to Earth’s orbit around the Sun, so the Earth, moon, and Sun do not line up exactly very often which makes eclipses more rare.

Along the way, collect a pair of scissors and a glue stick and your Eclipse Book packet on front table.
End up at your 6:00 meeting.
Begin your Eclipse Book assembly:
Cut out the five book pages and a cover.
Please note that each table will have one sheet of covers to share.
Return leftover blank rectangles to the front table.

When all your rectangles are cut out, collect ONE piece of black construction paper from the front table.
Fold it in half the long way.
Cut and Fold
Cut on the fold to give each partner one piece of black construction paper that is 4.5” x 9” long.
Fold your cut piece of black paper into fourths.

Retrieve two gluesticks.
Cut out and attach the cover on the front page of your “M” shape.
