Eclipse When one celestial body passes through the shadow of another
The umbra is a central cone of darkness which tapers away from the Earth or Moon the penumbra is an outer cone of partial shadow which diverges instead of tapering.

An eclipse of the Sun (or solar eclipse) can only occur at New Moon when the Moon passes between Earth and Sun. Total eclipse of the sun only occurs over a small area Never lasts more than 7 minutes at one location US total eclipse – 2017 One occurs every 18 months
