for marking and feedback
Mary Jacob, E-learning Advisor TurnItIn – Marking and Feedback Venue: 20 November 2015 and 8 March 2016 Date: Start: Time: Hugh Owen Library Training Room 16:00 Finish: 14:10 (8 Mar) Recommended for PGCTHE candidates. Description: Aims and approach UKPSF Mapping: A2, A3, K3, K4, V1 TurnItIn is an e-submission tool available through AberLearn Blackboard. It has two sets of key features. GradeMark offers easy online marking with rich feedback options including audio feedback and customised comment sets. This makes it particularly useful for formative feedback. Originality reports offer text-matching and can be used to identify student papers that have an overly-high percentage of text that matches other sources, which may indicate the possibility of plagiarism. It can also be used to find evidence in cases where plagiarism is already suspected. This is a combination demonstration/hands-on session. There will be a presentation of the principles and options for using TurnItIn for feedback and for text-matching, followed by hands-on experience in which participants mark a TurnItIn assignment. The various tools for feedback will be demonstrated and staff will have hands-on practice in using the feedback tools. There will be a demonstration to help staff interpret the Originality reports and suggest ideas for reducing incidence of plagiarism through assessment design and training for students in appropriate academic practice. This session will help participants to design their modules to meet elements of the AberLearn Blackboard Required Minimum Presence (RMP) and Enhanced Presence (EP) This session will be held in the Hugh Owen Training Room. Please come in through Hugh Owen Library and go up to E level. Turn left as you come out of the stairwell and proceed through the computer lab to the training room. Please contact the E-learning Group if you have any queries about this session. Expected outcomes/objectives: What will participants achieve? Make an informed decision about how discourage plagiarism in their own modules Plan a model to make use of TurnItIn for flagging up possible cases of plagiarism, and educating students about good practice Use TurnItIn for rich feedback on student assignments, including audio feedback and comment sets Any staff involved in teaching, marking assessments, or supporting the use of e-submission within their department or institute. This session is specifically aimed at teaching staff, but other staff are also welcome to attend. Who should attend: Use TurnItIn to meet elements of the AberLearn Blackboard Required Minimum Presence (RMP) in relation to Assignments Numbers: None Prerequisites: Minimum: 10 Maximum: 3 Session outline: Timings, breaks Consider the current practice for assignment submission in your department, and the needs of your students for feedback. Identify areas where e-submission and e-marking with TurnItIn may be useful. Pre-session work: 14:20 TurnItIn GradeMark for Feedback 14:10 Introduction Presentation/demonstration Group discussion - implications of using TurnItIn for feedback Hands-on – participants will use the tools to mark a practice assignment Demonstration - submit, view receipt, and mark using comment sets and audio feedback 15:10 TurnItIn originality reports demonstration Explore features of originality reports Framing the assessment 16:00 Finish 15:50 Using TurnItIn to meet the AberLearn RMP in the Assignments area for marking and feedback

GradeMark for feedback Marking form or rubric? Discussion – what approach fits your need? AberLearn Blackboard RMP 14:10 Introduction TurnItIn is an e-submission tool available through AberLearn Blackboard starting from AY 2013/14. It has two sets of key features . GradeMark offers easy online marking with rich feedback options including audio feedback and customised comment sets. This makes it particularly useful for formative feedback. Originality reports offer text-matching, similar to SafeAssign. Originality reports can be used to identify student papers that have an overly-high percentage of text that matches other sources, which may indicate the possibility of plagiarism. It can also be used to find evidence in cases where plagiarism is already suspected. This is a combination hands-on and discussion/demonstration session. There will be a presentation of the principles and options for using TurnItIn for feedback and for text-matching, followed by hands-on experience in which participants create a TurnItIn assignment, submit a sample document as if they were students, and then provide feedback on submissions. Participants will learn how to use and interpret originality reports. There will be some pair or small-group work in which participants plan an implementation of TurnItIn for one of their real modules. This session will help participants to design their modules to meet elements of the AberLearn Blackboard Required Minimum Presence (RMP) as revised in the summer of 2013. Please contact the Blackboard Team if you have any queries about this session. Use TurnItIn for rich feedback on student assignments, including audio feedback and comment sets Plan a model to make use of TurnItIn for flagging up possible cases of plagiarism, and educating students about good practice Make an informed decision about how to implement e-submission within the context of their own department and institute Use TurnItIn to meet elements of the AberLearn Blackboard Required Minimum Presence (RMP) in relation to Assignments

Why do students plagiarise?
16
Shift from policing to education
My ‘not-so-hidden agenda’ for this session – emphasise education, not policing
17
Education in good practice
How to evaluate sources How to cite properly How to incorporate quotes and paraphrases How to support an argument with evidence Internet Detective

Implementation Students Train in information skills Inform about text-matching Staff Consider existing procedures Determine report checking criteria Assessment Use formative feedback for process writing Write specific assignment briefs Implementation –I’ll use the Safe Assign Guide to talk through the key issues, some of which are listed below Giving students a good practice guide (e.g. Internet Detective, citation guides, also how to use sources) Using professional judgement by markers to decide which reports to view Working within existing departmental procedures Thinking about what students are told, how to frame use of plagiarism detection constructively Design out opportunities for plagiarism: Formative feedback and process writing can make it next to impossible for a student to cheat – for example, they could be equired to address how they used formative feedback on a draft to improve their writing when they make the final submission. Assignment briefs can provide opportunities for students to draw upon their own experiences or to choose a particular area to write about (e.g. choose a country and analyse its economic system), find examples from the real world that relate to a theoretical principle given in lecture, analyse an argument and present a case to agree/disagree with it etc. These are much harder to fake than a brief such as ‘What are the causes of the War of 1812?” where they might be able to find out the answer in Wikipedia.
