US Ships on High Seas 1785 Empress of China ship returned to NY w/ tea & silk, made a lot of $ Soon, many US merchant ships around the world US ships took advantage of Brit/French ships afraid of getting captured, US had 1,000 ships Piracy: Robbery at sea made the sea dangerous

Sailing the Seas Pirates from Barbary States: Morocco, Algiers, Tripoli, Tunis scared European ships in Mediterranean Demanded a tribute: protection money or they’d attack

War w/ Tripoli 1801, ruler of Tripoli demanded big tribute from US
Jefferson refused and Tripoli declared war 1804 their pirates seized US warship Philadelphia & jailed the crew Stephen Decatur, US Navy Cpt destroyed the ship Treaty in 1805, $60,000 for prisoners

Jefferson reelected 1804 Brits & France at war, US was neutral US merchants prosper for 2 years Brits & French try to block each other from trading w/ US

Brits needed sailors for their naval war Stopped US ships searching for British deserters Also impressed US citizens from ships June 1807, Brits ship Leopard stopped US ship Chesapeake off coast of VA to search US refused, Brits fired, killed 3 US was mad like the Rev. War, Jeff wanted

Problem for US Trade Embargo Act, Dec 1807 targeted Brits, banned trading with all foreign countries Disaster, unemployment in New England South couldn’t sell tobacco & cotton Repealed: removed the Embargo Act in 1809 Passed Nonintercourse Act, banned trade w/ Britain & France, also uncool

1808 Election Jefferson not seeking 3rd term
Republicans chose James Madison Federalists hoped embargo anger would help them win, chose Charles Pinckney Pinckney won New England but only 47 el. votes Madison won w/ 122 el. votes

France still seizing US ships Madison felt Britain was bigger threat Ohio became state in 1803, settlers were moving to Native land promised in treaty Natives teamed w/ British and fur traders

Wanted to stop white man taking land Felt treaties were worthless His brother Tenskwatawa, “Prophet” urged Natives to go old school Founded Prophetstown in N Indiana where Tippecanoe & Wabash Rivers meet

Harrison warned that US had more warriors than all Indian nations combined Tecumseh said, you have taken our land, killed us, prevent us from uniting. Can’t have

Battle of Tippecanoe Harrison attacked Prophetstown while Tecumseh was away trying to expand After 2 hours of battle, Prophet’s forces left Victory for US but led to Natives joining w/ British

War Hawks Call for War Henry Clay (KY) & John Calhoun (SC) demanded aggression w/ British Spend more $ for military, get more land Strong Nationalism: loyalty to their country wanted to expand the country Federalists were opposed June 1, 1812, even after Brits stopped seizing US ships (we didn’t know) US declared war
