Sarah is a 13-year-old female junior high school student. Sarah's mother has visited your counseling office at Sarah's school and shared her concern for her daughter with you.

3 Final Project In paragraph format, discuss and describe the following components of working with clients in group counseling: advantages and disadvantages, ethical considerations, working with challenges, assessing readiness and preparing clients, reducing risk, expectations for responsibility/commitment of members.

4 Final Project Discuss and integrate all of the concepts that we have covered this term including: ethical concerns when working with clients, how to assess treatment needs for individuals, how to encourage clients to actively participate in their treatment, and ways to help clients recognize and work with their strengths and challenges.

5 Final Project Addresses each of the following areas:
Why might you consider Sarah a good candidate for group counseling? What do you see as the potential advantages and disadvantages of such interaction for Sarah? Describe the type of group that would potentially serve Sarah best. What are your ethical concerns for placing Sarah in a group counseling environment?

6 Final Project What types of challenges might Sarah encounter in a group environment? How can you, as her counselor, hope to mitigate the impact of such outcomes? What are your legal and ethical concerns in this regard, if any? Why do you feel that Sarah is ready for the honest open communication that is expected in group counseling environments? How might you assist her in becoming more communicative?

7 Final Project Use appropriate references to course material.
How might you prepare Sarah for common components of group counseling such as group pressure to conform and scapegoating? As the group’s leader, what will be your plan to reduce potential risks to the group’s members and what will be your expectations for responsibility and commitment from each group member? What steps will you take to encourage and contribute to such behavioral outcomes? Use appropriate references to course material.

11 Social Justice Perspective
The SJP rests on the assumption that all people have a right to equitable treatment and a fair allocation of societal resources, including decision making. Some of the ethics codes refer to the role of social justice advocacy as an ethical mandate. The goal of counseling is to promote the empowerment of people who are marginalized and oppressed in our society. To translate this paradigm shift into one’s actual counseling practice, it is necessary to acquire a set of social justice and advocacy competencies.
