2 The Skull The skull is divided into two parts: Cranial Bones
Facial Bones

3 Cranium Function: Bone type: Joint Type: Hold and protect the brain.
Flat. Joint Type: Immovable. Joints are called sutures. Bones held together by fibres from each bone.

5 Cranium Infant cranium bones are not fully joined.
“Soft spots”. Allows for the baby to fit through the birth canal. Allows for growth of the brain.

7 Cranial Bones Frontal Bone Parietal Bones (2) Temporal Bones (2)
At the front of the cranium (forehead). Parietal Bones (2) At the top. Temporal Bones (2) On the sides (temples).

8 Cranial Bones Occipital Bone Ethmoid Bone At the back.
At the roof of the nose. Separates the nasal cavity from the brain.

9 Cranial Bones Sphenoid Bone At the base of the skull.
Shaped like a butterfly. Some sinuses are in this bone.

11 Face Made up of 14 bones. Function: Joint Type:
Attachment of muscles for facial expressions and jaw movements. Joint Type: All immovable but one.

12 Facial Bones Mandible Maxillae Zygomatic Bone (2)
Holds the lower teeth. Strongest and largest bone of the face. Moveable. Maxillae Forms the roof of the mouth. Zygomatic Bone (2) Form the cheek bones.

13 Facial Bones Nasal Bone (2) Lacrimal Bone (2) Vomer
Form the bridge of the nose. Lacrimal Bone (2) Medial part of the orbit (eye socket) Holds the tear ducts. Vomer Forms the nasal septum.
