Eligibility for employment: Full-time non-local students (excluding exchange students) Studying locally-accredited degree programmes or above Study period ≥ 1 academic year Possessing valid “No Objection Letter” (NOL) true copy Potential Employment Types: Summer Employment Study/Curriculum-related Internship Part-time on-campus employment

Issued upon approval of entry/ extension of stay application according to individuals Invalid upon any change in study programme/expiry of the permitted limit of stay New NOL will be issued, if applicable upon application On NOL, the employment type students could take would be stated clearly Ineligible non-local students need to seek prior approval from Immigration Department (ImmD) for taking up any employment

Actions to be taken by concerned units: Ensure students possess valid NOL stating internship right Ensure students present official employment letter Ensure total internship duration is not more than 1/3 of their programme period or 1 year, whichever shorter applies Decide and endorse whether students’ internship is study/ curriculum-related Keep record of endorsed internship by filling in the standard form provided by CPDC Send the completed form to CPDC by in May and Dec every year Record form sample:

Concerned Units: All possible hiring units, i.e. Academic units/ Administrative units/ Colleges Definition: Employment taken within the campus of CUHK; OR Employment with CUHK as the ultimate employer for location outside of CUHK campus; OR Employment offered by operators designated by CUHK Conditions: LESS THAN 18 hours per week (7 days from Sunday to Saturday) Unused hours cannot be roll-over from one week to another

Actions to be taken by concerned units: Hiring Person signs the forms (log sheet and time sheet) Ensure the students have filled in all necessary information Return the completed Time sheet to the Bursary Return the completed Log Sheet to CPDC, Office of Student Affairs at 2/F, Benjamin Franklin Centre, CUHK Campus together with a COPY of students’ NOL Each log sheet needs to be accompanied by a valid copy of NOL (regardless if it has been submitted before)

14 Employment Policy for Non-Local Students Summer Employment
Concerned Units: Students do not need to report their summer employment to the University Yet students of Final Year/ 1 year-programme should obtain advice from Academic Departments/Faculties and Graduate School Office before commencement of summer employment. According to the Immigration Department, the validity of the NOL for taking up summer jobs will be in line with the limit of stay granted to the students concerned and will normally cover the whole academic programme. Definition: Employment taken between 1 June and 31 August (both dates inclusive)

Actions to be taken by students: Understand and keep the NOL well Let the employer understand their summer employment right NOT necessary to inform the University Actions to be taken by Academic Departments/Faculties and Graduate School Office: Advise students of Final Year/ 1 year-programme their eligibility to take up summer employment (Not necessary to inform CPDC)

Purpose of policy (for reference only) To allow graduates to stay in Hong Kong for further development after graduation No special restrictions on successful applicants’ activities during their stay Eligibility Non-local students obtained a degree or higher qualification in a full-time locally accredited programme in Hong Kong

18 Employment Policy for Non-Local Graduates Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG)
Applications Fresh Graduates: Submit application within 6 months after the date of graduation shown on certificates (normally Nov/ Dec), after obtaining graduation letter from Registry/Graduate School around July upon application Students are allowed to leave Hong Kong before application To be granted 12 months on time limitation normally without any condition provided that normal immigration requirements are met Free to take up any employment without the need to seek prior approval from Immigration Department (ImmD) Could only start working AFTER obtaining formal approval of IANG from the ImmD

Returning Graduates: Submit application after 6 months of graduation Applications will be favorably considered with the following 2 conditions: Job secured is at degree holders level Remuneration package is set at market level Successful applicants will be granted 12 months of stay Free to change employment during permitted stay without the need to seek prior approval from ImmD

Interim Extension of Stay Prospective fresh graduates may apply for extension of stay to wait for graduation results A 3-month interim extension of stay on student condition will normally be granted Not allowed to take up employment during the interim extension of stay

21 Special Notes for Non-local Students Conditions of Stay
All non-local students should abide by the laws of Hong Kong and comply with the “Conditions of stay” as prescribed in Chapter 115A Regulation 2 ( (quoted below). Chapter 115A IMMIGRATION REGULATIONS Regulation 2: Conditions of stay (3) Permission given to a person to land in Hong Kong as a student shall be subject to the following conditions of stay- that he shall become a student only at a specified school, university or other educational institution and undertake such course of study as may be approved by the Director; and (b) that he shall not- (i) take any employment, whether paid or unpaid; or (ii) establish or join in any business.

Q: Can a unit hire students as full time student helpers during summer months? A: It would be regarded as summer employment, and should follow the regulations about summer employment Q: Are non-local student interns protected under labour insurances? A: Not under the governance by the ImmD, details should be referred to the labour department Q: If the students take up summer jobs, would it affect the maximum duration of internship the students could take? A: The maximum duration of internship is independent on the other two types of employment taken up
