I can tell you the position of objects.
G.1 Positions of Objects I can tell you the position of objects. Slide: Vocabulary introduction only! Put your cone_____(state the position) My cone is ________________.
15
I can name shapes no matter their direction or size.
G.2 Shapes In Many Ways I can name shapes no matter their direction or size. Workmat: I will drawn a shape, it may be big, small or facing a different direction. Can you name the shape? That shape is a ________________.
16
Identifying Two Dimensional Plane (Flat) Shapes and Three Dimensional (Solid) Shapes
17
A triangle has 3 sides and 3 vertices
Yield signs are triangles and a piece of bread can be cut into two triangles.
18
Square A square has 4 sides and 4 vertices. All sides are the same length in a square. A present can be wrapped in a square box. A cracker can be shaped like a square.
19
Circle A circle has a curved line and is round. A circle is a closed figure. Buttons can be round and so can an orange.
20
Oval An oval is a closed figure made with a curved line just like a circle only it is stretched out or elongated. An egg is shaped like an oval and so are some frames.
21
Rectangle A rectangle has 4 lines and 4 vertices. It has two pairs of sides that are the same length. A ping pong table and a door can both be rectangles.
22
Rhombus A rhombus has 4 sides that are all the same length and 4 vertices. The rhombus is shaped like a diamond. A kite and one of our pattern blocks is the shape of a rhombus.
23
Hexagon A hexagon has 6 sides and 6 vertices.
A beehive honeycomb and the design on the turtle’s shell are shaped like a hexagon.
24
Cube A Cube is a three-dimensional shape that has 6 faces.
Blocks can be cubes and so are the dice we use in math.
25
Cone A cone has line segments that start from one circle and go up to a point called the vertex. Ice-cream cones and party hats are shaped like cones.
26
Cylinder A cylinder is a closed solid that has two parallel (usually circular) bases connected by a curved surface. A thermos and a can of soda is shaped like a cylinder.
27
Sphere A sphere is a round, three-dimensional solid object shaped like a ball. A baseball and an ornament are shaped like a sphere.
28
Plane Shapes Sides Angles

Solid Figure Faces Corners / Vertices Edges

I can describe objects using shape names.
Shapes G.1 I can describe objects using shape names. Shape workmat: Tracing Shapes Identify shapes. Put an x on the square, circle the rectangle, put a happyface on the heart etc. I have circled a shape. What can you find in the classroom or outside that looks like this shape? The ____ looks like _________.
31
I can tell you how many sides and angles a shape has.
Shapes Sides and Angles I can tell you how many sides and angles a shape has. Workmat: I will drawn a shape. Can you tell me how many sides and angles does it have? That shape is a _________and it has _____ sides.
32
I can tell you if a shape is two or three dimensional.
2 – D and 3 – D Shapes G.3 I can tell you if a shape is two or three dimensional. “3-D Shapes are fat!” “2 – D Shapes are flat!” Slide: I will hold up a 3 dimensional shape or two dimensional shape. Fat or flat? __ D- Shapes are _______! That is a ___-dimensional shape because it is ___.
33
I can build shapes using sticks, drawing clay etc.
Building Shapes G.5 I can build shapes using sticks, drawing clay etc. Slide: Draw a picture using these shapes. (draw shapes) Make a shape using these (toothpicks, pretzels, or pipe cleaners) I made a _______ using ____________.
34
I can join shapes to make new shapes.
Making New Shapes G.6 I can join shapes to make new shapes. Slide: Hand out boxes of tangrams and have students join shapes to create new shapes. “Can you make a rectangle with two triangles?” hold them up. “Can you make a hexagon with two trapezoids?” hold them up. “Can you make a rhombus using two triangles?” hold them up. I made a _______ using ____________.
35
I can join shapes to make a picture.
Using Shapes to Make Pictures G.6 I can join shapes to make a picture. Slide: Allow students to free explore and make pictures with their shapes. I made a _______ using ____________.
