Will You Know What To Do? DO NOT WRITE!!
We may all one day be unexpectedly faced with a life-or-death situation that requires quick action. You may witness a loved one having a heart attack…you may be baby-sitting a child who burns herself with hot water...you may be faced with a victim of a fall who is now unconscious...Will you know what to do? Unfortunately, many times the answer is no. By the end of this unit have learned a guide to first aid procedures.
4
Emergency An emergency is a serious situation that occurs without warning and calls for quick action. An emergency exists whenever a person is injured or experiences sudden illness.
5
First Aid First Aid is the immediate and temporary care given to a person who has been injured or suddenly becomes ill.
6
Good Samaritan Laws Laws that protect people who give first aid in good faith and without negligence or misconduct. Good Samaritan Laws encourage people to help others in an emergency situation.
7
Recognizing an Emergency
unusual sights appearances or behaviors odors noises.
8
3 C’s Once an emergency has been recognized, be calm and follow the emergency action steps: CHECK CALL CARE
9
CHECK First, you must first survey the scene to ensure your safety.
Check for anything dangerous is present, such as a live wire, or fire. Try to determined what happened, how many victims, and any bystanders
10
CHECK cont’d -ABC’s After determining that the scene is safe, you must do a primary survey of the victim(s). You will check to determine if the victim: is conscious has an open, unobstructed airway is breathing has a heartbeat is not bleeding severely
11
CALL Call 911 or the workplace emergency number.
Give them a description of the emergency situation as well as the location of the scene. NEVER hang up first. Let the EMS dispatcher hang up first.
12
CARE Provide care based on your primary survey of the victim until medical personnel arrives and takes over. But…before giving care…
13
Consent to Give First Aid
Before giving care to a conscious victim you must first get consent. Actual consent is oral or written permission to give first aid from a mentally competent adult. If the victim does not give consent, DO NOT give care, but still call 911.
14
Consent to Give First Aid
If the victim is unconscious, confused, or seriously ill, they may not be able to grant consent. Implied Consent means that a victim would agree to the care if he or she could.
15
Preventing Disease Transmission
The risk of getting a disease while giving first aid is extremely rare. Universal Precautions Steps taken to avoid contact with blood & other body fluids. Use protective equipment, such as gloves and face masks Thoroughly wash hands after giving care.
16
Providing Care Only Move an injured victim if:
The scene is becoming unsafe You have to reach another victim who may have a more serious injury or illness You need to provide proper care (Ex: someone collapsed on the stairway and needs CPR. CPR needs to be performed on a flat surface.)
